The Nakuru County government is under scrutiny for exhuming bodies from the Nakuru South Cemetery.
Local media reports reveal a deeply troubling situation involving exhumed graves, scattered human remains, and community distress. Residents near the cemetery have reported alarming discoveries of human skulls and decomposed remains, tracing the exhumations to the night of Monday, 25 November. The county government reportedly initiated these actions in response to the cemetery reaching its full capacity and seeking to create additional burial space through controversial means.
"We have been stumbling on skulls belonging to both children and adults. They have been exhuming the bodies, and that is not fair," one resident reveals.
Community members have expressed profound anguish over the process, with residents lamenting the emotional and cultural impact of the move. Social media documentation has further amplified the community's concerns, with video evidence showing human skulls collected in sacks and graves being excavated to significantly reduced depths of two to four feet, compared to the traditional six-foot standard.
"This is an old cemetery. They now want to reuse it, and that's why they are exhuming the bodies," says another resident.
In response to the escalating controversy, Nakuru County officials have categorically denied involvement. Roselyn Mungai, the County Executive Committee Member for Health Services, explicitly states that the county government has neither authorized nor conducted any exhumations at the South Cemetery. Officials maintain that their cemetery maintenance procedures are routine and designed to preserve the site's dignity and facilitate family visitations.
"The county government of Nakuru has not authorized nor conducted any exhumation at the South Cemetery," Mungai clarifies.
Section 146 of the Public Health Act (Cap 242) explicitly prohibits the exhumation of human remains from authorized burial grounds without proper permits. This legislative provision safeguards the sanctity of final resting places and ensures that any necessary exhumations are conducted with appropriate respect and authorization.
