Members of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) have called for the resignation of Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi, following his recent criticisms of the government.
This demand has been amplified by Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, who expresses disapproval of Muturi's remarks regarding the rising incidents of abductions and forced disappearances. During a visit to the North Eastern region, Duale urged Muturi to resign if he felt discontent with his role, emphasizing the need for honouring the appointing authority. He referred to Muturi's comments as "unhealthy and inappropriate," highlighting a growing rift within the Cabinet.
Senate Leader of Majority Aaron Cheruyiot has added his voice to the dissent, asserting that Muturi's statements bore a tribal undertone. Speaking in Mandera, Cheruyiot emphasized the Kenyan people's desire for a government that ensures fairness and equality for all citizens, warning against leaders who engage in divisive language. National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah also condemned Muturi's remarks during an event in his home region of Embu.
He called for Muturi's criticism of government leaders to cease, suggesting that it detracts from addressing national challenges. "Those who pontificate and attempt to lecture the President, the Deputy President, and other leaders on how well they know and are polished, please give us a break," Ichung'wah remarked.
Mogotio MP Reuben Kiborek has also joined the chorus of criticism towards Muturi, attributing the ongoing problems related to abductions to Muturi's previous tenure as Speaker. Kiborek contends that Muturi had not taken adequate measures to tackle these issues during his time in that role.
These calls for Muturi’s resignation come in the wake of him being the only dissenting voice in the Cabinet on matters of abductions. His concerns were reiterated following the tragic discovery of the bodies of two of the missing Kitengela four brothers.
Yesterday, Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale passionately appealed to President William Ruto not to dismiss Justin Muturi. During his address, Khalwale implored the President to consider the situation from a parental perspective, emphasizing that the abduction is a personal and painful issue for Muturi. Muturi has been vocal about his concerns since his son disappeared during the July Gen Z protests.
Khalwale expresses strong solidarity with Muturi and states that calls for the cabinet secretary's resignation amid the distress of a father searching for his son are unfounded. He further encourages President Ruto to view the public's frustration regarding the abduction matter not as a personal attack but as an important challenge that the government must address to restore safety and security.
