Gusii Leaders Abandon Ruto, Raila to Back Matiang’i’s Presidential Bid

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i's announcement of his presidential bid for the 2027 elections has ignited a significant political realignment in the Gusii region.

This potentially challenges the established dominance of President William Ruto and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga. The region, encompassing approximately 960,000 votes, is poised to become a critical battleground in the upcoming elections. Matiang’i, upon his return from the United States this week, was met with enthusiastic support from Gusii leaders and residents, signalling a potential shift in the region’s political allegiance.

His declaration has galvanised local political figures, including key allies of both Ruto and Odinga, across the counties of Kisii and Nyamira. In the 2022 elections, Kisii County registered 637,010 voters, while Nyamira County had 323,283. According to data from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, Odinga secured 264,988 votes in Kisii compared to Ruto’s 135,140. In Nyamira, Odinga garnered 104,477 votes against Ruto’s 63,645.

The entry of Matiang’i into the presidential race introduces a dynamic that could significantly alter these numbers in the next election cycle. Matiang’i has pledged to engage with citizens nationwide, addressing critical national issues and restoring hope to those feeling marginalised by the current administration.

"Our people should not lose hope. We will cross that bridge and fix the issues when time comes," he stated, addressing his supporters.

Upon his arrival in Kisii town, Matiang’i was greeted with a grand reception, as thousands of residents lined the streets in celebration. Kisii Governor Simba Arati accompanied Matiang’i, symbolising unity and shared ambition for the region’s political future.

Arati openly endorsed Matiang’i’s bid and urged him to extend his campaign beyond Gusii to gain national support. Arati voiced concerns over the region’s underrepresentation in government appointments, particularly noting the difficulty in securing a single Principal Secretary position.

"We are despised when it comes to government appointments," he remarked, reflecting a growing sentiment among residents about the Gusii community's marginalisation in national politics.

ODM leaders in the region, including Senators Richard Onyonka (Kisii) and Okong’o Omogeni (Nyamira), were instrumental in planning Matiang’i’s homecoming. Lawmakers Anthony Kibagendi, Clive Gisairo, Obadiah Barongo, and Patrick Osero also rallied behind Matiang’i, calling on Kenyans to help unseat President Ruto in 2027.

Matiang’i’s convoy passed through key towns such as Kijauri, Chebilat, Keroka, Keumbu, and Nyamira, attracting large crowds at each stop. Notably, North Mugirango MP Joash Nyamoko, a known ally of President Ruto, joined the procession, indicating potential shifts within the ruling camp. Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo praised residents for their high turnout, emphasising the importance of regional unity.

Former West Mugirango MP Vincent Kemosi, who recently declined a government ambassadorial appointment, also voiced support for Matiang’i, pledging to advance his presidential bid. As Matiang’i launches his national campaign, Gusii leaders believe his candidacy could redefine the region’s political influence.
