Shocking details of how the company run by a deported Chinese national mistreated Kenyan workers have emerged.
Sonlink's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Liu Jiaqi was deported to China last week by immigration authorities after he was caught on camera referring to Kenyans as monkeys and insulting President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Workers at Sonlink K. Limited, a Chinese company dealing in motorcycles along the Northern Bypass in Ruiru have exposed what Kenyans working at the firm were put through.
For instance, local workers at the company are deducted Sh1,000 from their small salaries for each phone call they miss from the boss.
Further, the company cuts Sh50 for every minute a Kenyan worker arrives late to work regardless of the prevailing situation, the Standard reports. Company regulations state that lateness penalty starts counting immediately after 8:30 am.
“Time after 8:31am and 13:31pm treat as late. Fine Sh50 for every minute of lateness,” reads rule number four.
As if this is not enough, making noise, laughing and unaccounted 15-minute movement could see you fired or denied the day's pay.
“Every employee must stick to the work. No laughing. No noise. If (you) leave the position for 15 minutes without reasons. Treat it as absence,” say the rules.
Every employee must sign in and out four times each day; at 8:30am, 12:30pm, 13:30pm, 17:30pm or report to the firm's management in case they fail to.
The employee who recorded the deported company CEO spewing racist remarks is said to have been fined Sh2,000 and was being forced to append his signature to the letter penalizing him.
“Insults here are a common occurrence and we just persevere to keep our jobs,” an employee told The Standard.

Does Kenya government have labor standards? Or are Kenyans left to be enslaved by any foreigner? These are too many incidences with the Chinese. Kenya government needs to review it's relationship with the Chinese and all other foreign governments in relation to labor laws. Otherwise, soon Mau Mau II will take place. God help Kenya!!
The top leaders have not commented on this treatment of Kenyans by Chinese. Is it because they see nothing wrong or they simply don't care? Are they worried that the Chinese gova will not give them more loans wanaomba omba kila siku to line their pockets.
I’m surprised that these people who are known to eat frogs, donkeys and dogs believe that they’re superior to Africans! We have to change our ways to disapprove them.
I disagree with the racist and abusive language of this CEO. However most of the rules sound pretty standard for most workplaces. Factory and warehouse jobs in the US have very strict attendance and production requirements. A production line cannot stop while workers wander around and play games while the clock.
@ Mumbi, what Iam reading here does not amount to"pretty standard rules in most workplaces. These are workers treated like a cog in a wheel, with not regard to their feelings as human beings.ofcourse wondering around when you are supposed to be working is not acceptable, but that's not what Iam reading here. What Iam reading here is that these people are supposed to work like machines, till they break and then replaced.
Good job chinese guy!! finya wao kabisa, only in Africa do you let foreigners treat you like shit, we treat each other like shit all the time from the way we treat nannies to shamba boys and then we are surprised if foreigners assimilate to our way of living. Many Kenyan bosses abuse beat and withhold pay as punishment, it is a systematic problem not just this with this firm.
The Racial words were unacceptable,,though the clock in out is a good standard procedure morning Lunch break and going home...Phone deductions ?? Company phone or personal..or while within work na customer need an item from specific section which you are assigned..He is gone professional should audit the farm lesson learned even here People curse a lot even directed to highest power bottom line unacceptable..ulimi ni kiumbe kidogo matatizo yake ni makubwa
This is the best time to investigate all Chinese employers with how they treat Kenyans. It is really sad the government can consider such business to be done by Kenyans. The can import such goods from China and this can create jobs. Come on! Kenyans wake-up!. The government can create fund to support import and export classes so that the common mwananch.
Whatever happened is a gear to wake you up!.
I have been to offices (public and private) in Kenya and understand the frustrations of the Chinese managers. The only problem is that they cannot deduct Shs 50 per minute on a monthly salary of Shs 5K. They have to prorate their deduction from the monthly salary. Or set the regular pay to their Shs 50 per minute.
Good God! The new masters are in, worse than the old ones. Poor Kenyans are we really that desperate. It's 2018 not 1950s. Wake up good people.
