Two mistakes by the veteran players Willy Ambaka and Collins Injera in the first half were enough to deny Kenya Sevens their first ever Hong Kong title after they succumbed 24-12 to Fiji on Sunday afternoon.
Kenya faced Fiji in the final, the same opponent who trounced them in the Vancouver Sevens finals last month. Although Kenya put a spirited fight at Hong Kong stadium, mighty Fijians proved too strong for them to conquer.
Kenya trailed Fiji 17-0 at the interval, a reminiscent of Canada Sevens final where the islanders led 29-7. Kenya pulled one back after Billy Odhiambo's score, but Valemo Ravouvou’s try for Fiji dashed their hope for title.
Skipper Oscar Ouma attempted to revive Kenya's title hope after he tapped the ball from a penalty to score his 77th try, but it was too little too late to resuscitate Shujaa.
Kenya finished with 19 points from their exploits to move one position higher to seventh in the 2018 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series with 83 points, displacing England who slipped to eighth place with 71 points.
Shujaa now shifts their focus to the ongoing 2018 Commonwealth Games, where they will play against New Zealand, Canada and Zambia in Pool C.
