Police Deny Using Live Bullets on NASA Supporters

The National Police Service has denied claims that police officers used live bullets to repulse opposition supporters who turned up in masses to escort their leader Raila Odinga from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to the City Centre as he returned to the country from United States.

In a statement on Friday on behalf of Inspector General of Police, Police spokesman George Kinoti said that police only used teargas and water cannons to disperse the protesting Nasa supporters.

"The National Police Service wishes to inform that in today's operations to respond to the unauthorised processions organised by NASA coalition,no live fire was used; only tear gas and water cannons were deployed for crowd control," ,the statement reads.

Kinoti further confirmed that five individuals died during today's incidents, noting that they were roughed up by mob after they were found looting property.

"We are however aware that sections of the mobs accompanying the NASA convoy, looted property and five (5) persons were killed by stoning in different incidences after having been caught stealing by enraged crowds. Two were stoned along Landies Road, two next to country bus station and one along Racecourse Road. Sadly, these incidences occurred before the Police arrived at the various scenes. All these incidences are under investigation."

He also refuted allegations that security officers fired at opposition leaders' entourage and maintained that no live bullets were fired during the operation.

"We wish to refute claims that a vehicle in the convoy was shot at by an officer and reiterate our position that no live ammunition was used today by any officer."

He called all persons whose property was looted during the incidents to file a report at the nearest police station.

"We are aware that several innocent Kenyans had their property looted, vandalised or vehicles stoned by the mobs that accompanied the NASA leaders,or while headed to join the convoys, especially along Mombasa road, Outer Ring Road,Airport North Road, Jogoo Road and Haille Sellasie Road. In this regard therefore, we call upon anyone who may have been assaulted or lost property in any way to report to the nearest Police Station for further action."

Uwongo! There is CAUSE and EFFECT! Give them a right to free assembly! If they are given a right ot assembly without the presence of heavily armed police, there will be no destruction of human lives and properties.

Did you leave home thinking the police would use well cushioned sponges on you? You pellet your stones on them and I suppose you think they don't get hurt, no families to go back to? You choose to loot and steal but you expect nothing should happen. When UhuruRuto get sworn in thats the time you will realize Kenya is bigger than you, NRM goons.

Why do we have jails and prisons in Kenya??
Are they decorations?

Arrest the litters and people destroying property.
Then charge them in court.

The Kenya police is just killing Kenyans. These are killers in police uniform and they should be arrested and locked up in jail.

Yep file reports and sue NASA behind ! Nonsense, every time they cannot gather without displaying barbaric emotions. Sue , sue , sue NASA for all the property destroyed . Goons belong in jail .

For the NASA supporter in the US, UK and other developed countries, go throw stones into a police station and tell me what happens to you. Stone throwers in Kenya, police will act in self-defense. NASA goons and goonettes are being misled by Raila and company.

@Doreen, "Why is Kenya police killing Kenyans?" Please don't forget that the Kenya police is the third most corrupt and inefficient force in the world! What do you expect?

You saw them shoot a baby and a pregnant mother and nothing has happened to them for all the atrocities that they have committed against humanity!

Why is the Kenyan Police the most corrupt institution in Kenya? During the early years of Johnston Kamau (Jomo Kenyatta) administration, they (police) sent a delegate to him (Johnston) asking for a pay raise. He did not hesitate to answer them by telling them to reap where they work! That is the true picture of the origins of the police corruption in Kenya. We can therefore conclude that he (Johnston Kamau) was the founding Father of the police corruption in our beautiful republic as we know it. His ghost is still alive and kicking 39 years after his death.

Yah right the people who died killed themselves. This Kenyan police are a joke. And you wonder why things are getting worse. Those people you killed had family who have every right to avenge the death of their kin.If this is Matiangi`s way of showing he is in control he needs to keep his nose in education.Quite incompetent and a shame in a country that calls it self among the most if not the most developed in east africa.

Yep, if they have to use live bullets, use them, it's long overdue. Uhururto should borrow a page from Turkey, and use any means necessary. Enough is enough.

So which mobs were on the Raila side and which ones were on the Jubilee stoning looters? Both sets were obviously defying the order not to demonstrate or march! Watch events in Zimbabwe and learn from them.
