Editors Tell Off President Uhuru for Threatening to Shut Down Media Houses if they Cover Raila's Swearing-in

The Kenya Editors Guild has condemned threats by the state that it will shut down media houses if they air Tuesday's controversial swearing-in of opposition leaders Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka.

In a statement issued by chairman of Kenya Editors Guild, Linus Kaikai, the editors condemned the summoning of managers from mainstream media by President Kenyatta at State House in Nairobi.

“We have just learnt today that on Friday last week, a section of media managers and select editors from the main media houses were quietly summoned to a meeting at the State House, Nairobi,” says Mr. Kaikai.

“The brief meeting attended by President Uhuru Kenyatta, Deputy President William Ruto, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi, ICT Secretary Joe Mucheru and AG Githu Muigai did not bode well for the freedom of expression and press in the country,” added Kaikai.

Noting that the media is not biased in its coverage, the editors opposed the “dressing down the media executives received at the State House meeting."

“At the meeting, President Kenyatta expressly threatened to shut down and revoke the licences of any media house that would broadcast live the planned purported swearing in of NASA leaders Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka on Tuesday. That direct threat has subsequently been echoed, off record by other senior members of government,” read the stern statement.

"We would like to state it with all the clarity we can that the media is not an actor in the ongoing contest between Jubilee and NASA over the outcome of the last General Election. The Media remains a mere messenger and a chronicler of any events happening in our country."

"Consequently, the Editors Guild condemns and rejects the threats and purported instructions issued at the State House on Friday. We call on all media houses and journalists to carry on their work diligently and to report impartially on all matters of public interest," said the editors.

The genocide in Rwanda & 2007/07 killing was spread through the Radio. Whatever it will take to keep peace do it.

The ILLEGALITY of Kibaki's "re-Election was the Mother of the 2007-2008 PET's. And it was Sparked by the Blatant RIGGING of the Presidential Election at the KICC (chaired by Martha Karua) as Kivuitu slept at the Wheel. RIGGING was the Mother of the 2007-2008 (and the Media was the Brain-Child).

As distasteful as it may be to the president,he should not interfere with the media. The media is not there to support NASA.( ihope not)But if they are breaking any laws,by all means gag them. Not too long ago Mr. president you talked about thick skin. Are you softening?
Yes democracy can be messy.Kenya is not a totalitarian regime.
If I were the president, I would let this clown RAO conduct his side show without interference. There have been questions about the legality of this"clowning".Can someone on mwakilishi who is in the know tell us if what RAO will do is against the law?
Yes as annoying as the media gets sometimes to certain people,I would not wish to go back to those days of- ati amesema nini...Nyonga yeye.
having said this, I believe we have adequate laws that deal with "errant journalists".

Freedom of speech/media. That is what the constitution states. As long as the media is not breaking the law, by all means we want to see what is going to take place. Why control what people want to see. Even if the media are shut down, people nowadays have cameras. This is the digital world! Media houses are actually even trying to stay afloat based on how many people nowadays have good recording devices.

Why did it take 3 days for this to be revealed? Is there something the media folks are holding back or not telling?

Media lazima imulike yote. Jubilee is pretending that this swearing in is a small event if so let them conduct their swearing in in peace .A small event should not ruffle your feathers but then again wengi wenyu ni vifaranga vya komputa hata manyoya ya kweli hamna mna lalamika nini?let the press do their job.

mkenya halisi, you raise avery important factor in this convolution ,and that is population.imagine nairobi with apopulation of only 1.6million.wr would have few slams, few malayas, few matatus, few unemployments, few polution and few corrupt people...

Freedom comes with responsibility and not to stir chaos. The opposition should wait for an official Election Day , having lost in the first
election and asked for nullification and were given another chance which they boycotted .It seems to me all this is planned along the way because they knew
they were not going to win the Election in the first place , so they are using every means possible to force themselves to power. The opposition
should understand our Security forces are keeping an eye them and will not hesitate to enforce the law and bring peace to our country if they try something stupid...
What the opposition leaders are doing will not be done any country ,because they will be immediately be arrested and charged with treason. In some countries treason is
also a death sentence.

Maxiley!! I can't believe you have stooped this low! God, those people could be one of your brothers, sisters, mother na kathalika. C'mon now! Your recommendations would be akin to ethnic cleansing. Shame on you and Mkenya halisi. We are all stressed by this mess, but we don't need to dehumanize anyone. Remember, most of the young men/women parading in these demonstrations have nothing to lose as society have mostly forgotten about them and life opportunities simply are not there for them! You two should hang your heads in shame and ask for forgiveness. What you are basically saying is that if one is poor, one should be denied the right of expression or right to live. If that is the case, my dear brothers, this sister (me) would not be here today as my parents were once those poor folks who simply refused to give up and chose hope over despair. They opted to believe the future would reward their efforts to see their kids through school. Wow, you have blown me away!! Hitler mentality. Mshindwe! Back to the subject at hand, I don't agree with the government's stance of removing media on this. They should have used reverse psychology and allow Raila to be "sworn in", make him the clown of the world as that is exactly what he is, then carry on as usual. The Police should be there to maintain order, nothing less, nothing more. Removing media scrutiny only serves to step into the accusations being alleged by NASA, i.e corruption and oppression of their people. Let them be "sworn in" to be president of whatever they want to proclaim as long as there is no violence, which was my worst fear and so far not witnessed. He, ati a few slams, a few malayas, few ma three's.....mungu wangu!! Guest 1 pales in comparison to your comments Maxiley and Mkenya halisi!!

Oh lala Sukari. I dont share same thoughts as Mkenya Halisi. Iam not for exterminating anybody. If you read again,I was just musing with the idea that if the population of say Nairobi was 1.6million,but with the same resources, and amenities wouldnt the environment and welfare of Nairobians be better,at least most...? I guess a better example is this: two guys married .Everything being equal(for simplicity)except, one has 2 kids, and the other has 6.Unfortunately both loose jobs, and stay unemployed for 7months.of the two,who do you think might have a harder time. Most people would change to say the one with 6 kids would have a harder time. Now multiply that 100 times... you get my drift...
