Three People Confirmed Dead, Several Feared Trapped as 5-Story Building Collapses in Nairobi

Three people have been confirmed dead after a five-story building collapsed in Huruma Estate, Nairobi early Sunday morning.

The National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU) said one of the victims passed away while being taken to hospital while the others was retrieved from the rubble. The three bodies, including that of an expectant were taken to Chiromo Mortuary.

Three other people were rushed to hospital as a multi-agency team continues with search and rescue mission. The ill-fated structure is said to have caved in at around 1.30am. The disaster management team was forced to bring down one side of temporary residential structures to create access for the rescue operation.

“National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU) appeals to the members of the public to cooperate with the agencies on the ground to allow a smooth operation. We mind safety for all. Otherwise we have mobilized all the needed resources,” NDMU said in a statement.

The rescue team constitutes officials from the military, police, National Youth Service, St John Ambulance, Red Cross, and Nairobi County.

Several people are feared trapped in the debris. 11 of the 12 families that had been residing in the building are yet to be accounted for, while tenants in the adjacent buildings have been evacuated.

The building is said to have been marked for demolition by the National Construction Authority (NCA).

Poleni sana. Haya ndiyo mavuno au matunda ya "Ufisadi - corruption." Ufisadi unatokana na uroho, (greed) uongo, uchoyo, na tamaa nyingi isiyo na mwisho.

The frequency at which collapsing of buildings in Nairobi is being seen today is alarming. The sage have said,"there is no short cut to success'.Someone is certainly responsible for shoddy work.Either poor, or no inspection was done. Not to mention unqualified contractors. And yes ,above all money changing hands to "short cut the circuit".
If its found that greedy individuals did not do their work as supposed to, this should be treated as homicide, and the culprits brought to book. And of course I am assuming they wont bribe their way out of the legal entanglement they will find themselves in.
@ Imara, corruption has bore terrible fruits in our athletes as well. The latest being Asbel Kiprop. And Ruth Jebet ,the Kenyan born Baharaini. The atheletics body keeps saying that they are tough on dopping, and year after year kenyan athletes are found dopped. Our image as clean runners has eroded. This taints the image of clean runners like Kipchoge, vivian cheruiyot, and other clean runners. God forbid, if the afformentioned two are ever found dopping, I will stop supporting team Kenya.
We know corruption is ruining our society. Why cannot we stop it?do we like the fruits? The onerous is on every Kenyan to fight this vice. And yes talk is cheap.Time for action.Uhuru has said he is serious about eradicating corruption. Let's line behind him,and do our part.Just saying NO to corruption is not enough. We need action.

Hii ni mukologo wa Corruption/Ufisadi na ujinga pamoja. The owner of the building must have spent more than shs 10m.on that building even on sub-standard materials.Huyu jinga must have bribed the county supervisors with another shs 2m.Whatever come may,the owner will have wasted more that shs 20m.to "FINISH" the whole matter.Remember he will bribe again for acquittal.Maybe he is Sonko,Kabogo,Wambui,Wanjala,Joho etc camrade in drug trade or NYS supplier,MP,Party owner whose money just flow.DAWA-FIRING SQUAD ONLY
