I Fly Only First Class Because of My Medical Condition: Impeached Nairobi Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi Defends Herself
Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi had opened up on why she only flies First Class whenever she makes a trip locally or abroad.
Speaking to NTV on Monday at City Hall, the embattled Speaker defended her decision to always fly First Class which was questioned by Members of the County Assembly (MCAs).
Elachi said she has a medical condition that requires she only uses the First Class section, adding that this even happened when she was in the Senate between 2013 and 2017.
" It's unfortunate that I will have to talk today about my..a medical condition that I have had even in the Senate and that's why I never used to travel a lot and even hear I don't travel a lot. Even in the Senate they would pay [First Class ticket] because of my condition."
"It's not because you want prestige because even economy class is prestige already, so its a medical condition that if I don't, sometime when you arrive you find yourself being carried by an ambulance." Elachi said.
She added: My doctors at Nairobi Hospital and Mediheal know that, Mishra (Kesses MP) knows that because he's the one who helped me go to India for treatment."
Last week, Nairobi MCAs voted to impeach Elachi on accusations of inappropriately spending taxpayers cash during foreign trips.103 Ward Representatives voted for her removal against two while the rest abstained.
She was also accused of abuse of office, gross misconduct, conflict of interest, undermining the authority of the County Assembly Board and failure to show leadership.

In June this year, I flew on Swiss International to Nairobi. I heard a mzungu in my economy section introduce himself to the Kenyan sitting next to him as the immediate former Germany ambassador to Kenya. He was very casually dressed and had no sense of entitlement. The US embassy, to my knowledge, only pays business class sits for its ambassador. Everyone else is travels economy.
Where did we Africans go wrong with the entitlement mentality?
