19-Year-Old Kenyan Student and Boyfriend Arrested for Faking Abduction, Demanding Ransom from Brother

A Kenyan college student and her boyfriend were on Friday evening arrested by detectives from Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for allegedly faking her abduction.

The 19-year-old student at Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) is said to have called her brother claiming that her kidnappers were demanding Sh20,000 ransom to release her.

The brother sent the money to her phone after which it was switched off, prompting him to record a statement with the police shortly after. Sleuths from DCI’s Special Crimes Prevention Unit immediately began searching for the student.

Detectives traced the 19-year-old student at a club located at Thika Road Mall (TRM) in Nairobi moments later together with her friends, where they were partying.

“While observing their reactions, the boyfriend was contacted and asked to go and record a statement with police on the issue,” DCI said in a statement.

Immediately after her boyfriend was asked to go record a statement, the KMTC student switched on her phone and called the mother claiming that she had just been dropped at Galleria Mall in Karen.

“Upon arrest, it was established that the Ksh. 20,000 was still in her MPesa account,” DCI added.

Also arrested was a group of university students who were partying with them at the entertainment joint. DCI did not reveal the identity of the teenage student only stating that she is based at KMTC in Mbagathi.
