New Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo Fires Entire Cabinet a Day After Assuming Office

Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo has sent home the entire county cabinet a day after he was sworn-in.

Nyaribo, who took over following the death of Governor John Nyagarama, directed all county executive committee (CEC) members to hand over immediately.

He took oath of office on Tuesday, two weeks after Nyagarama, 74, succumbed to COVID-19 complications at the Nairobi Hospital.

Nyaribo was elected alongside Nyagarama in 2013 and has served as the county’s deputy governor for the past eight years.

At the time of his death, Nyagarama and Nyaribo did not have a good working relationship and the latter was sidelined in the management of county affairs.

In 2018, Nyaribo fired five payroll officers in absence of Governor Nyagarama over alleged enrolment of ghost workers into the county payroll. Nyagarama was undergoing treatment in the US at the time.

Due to his differences with Nyagarama, CECs and other county employees reportedly undermined his authority.

He becomes the fourth deputy governor in the country to assume office following the death of governors Nderitu Gachagua and Wahome Gakuru (Nyeri County) and Joyce Laboso (Bomet County).

Nyaribo will complete his predecessor’s remaining 18 months in office.
