Autopsy Reveals the Cause of Athlete Agnes Tirop's Death

An autopsy has revealed that slain long-distance athlete Agnes Tirop died of stab wounds on the neck. 

It also established that the 25-year-old Olympic star was hit on the head with a blunt object.

The postmortem examination was conducted at Iten County Referral Hospital mortuary on Tuesday by government pathologist Dr. Dorothy Njeru and a family pathologist.

The three-hour procedure was witnessed by a forensic physician at the ICRH and a team of Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives led by the head of homicide unit Martin Nyaguto.

“Generally, the examination has shown injuries due to blunt post-trauma,” Dr. Njeru said.

Tirop, a two-time World Championship bronze medallist, was found dead with stab wounds at her home in Iten, Elgeyo-Marakwet County on October 13th.

Her husband Ibrahim Rotich, who is the prime suspect in her murder, was arrested in Mombasa last week trying to flee to a neighboring country. 

An Iten court on Monday allowed police to detain Rotich for 20 days pending completion of investigations.

Tirop represented Kenya in the 5,000 meters race at the Tokyo Olympics two months ago and finished fourth in the finals. 

She shattered the women-only 10km world record in Germany last month, crossing the line in 30:01 to shed 28 seconds from the previous 19-year record held by Morocco’s Asmae Leghzaoui.

She will be laid to rest at Kapnyamisa village in Mosoriot, Nandi County on Saturday.
