IEBC Bans 2022 Aspirants from Participating in Fundraisers After December 9th

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has warned 2022 aspirants against participating in public fundraisers.

IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati says politicians found taking part and holding public fund drives after December 9th will be barred from running for office in next year’s elections.

Chebukati stated that the deadline for participating in public fundraisers for those eyeing various seats in 2022 will elapse after the above-mentioned date.

"On the issue of harambees, after December 9th, it becomes an election offense," said Chebukati.

Chebukati says any aspirant who defies the order will have violated Section 26 of the Election Act and will be blocked from vying in the 2022 general election. The electoral commission will work closely with the office of the Director of Public Prosecution to enforce the order and prosecute individuals flouting the rules.

The IEBC chief was speaking on Wednesday in a virtual meeting with the Senate Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs.

I don’t understand Kenya most of the time! Let people raise funds for THEIR elections. So the alcoholic President seats by when the electoral board does this? Anyway, for those still looking to help…there’s a lady looking to run for women representative in laikipia county. Her phone number is 0722484188. Any contribution to Virginia Wambui is highly appreciated! Join her on Facebook too!

Tell wambui to publish her manifesto here telling others what she intends to do if elected! You can’t ask for money just to support anyone because they are running for some position! Kenyans please don’t be conned!

This is not an IEBC ban, it's the law. Any candidate who violates should expect court challenges from their competitors.

Aspirants can still send money thru mpesa proxies spouses etc. They can donate without holding a fundraiser. Purpose of the law is to level the playing field?
