Hell on Earth: Violent Details of Kenya’s New War Zone in Haiti

Kenyan police officers are gearing up for a challenging mission in Haiti, a country that is on the verge of collapse and where other nations have backed out.

Following the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021, the situation in the nation has rapidly decayed. Armed gangs now rule over 80 per cent of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and Kenya has been asked to send 1,000 officers to support Haiti's 10,000 policemen who are struggling to maintain law and order. President William Ruto, USA’s new ally, has fostered emerging relations with Haiti, vowing to send the police officers to help initiate calm in what has become a volatile political and social climate.

While the UN Security Council endorsed a resolution on peacekeeping in Haiti, no country was willing to lead the mission until Kenya took a stride. The country holds the verve of being the world's oldest independent black republic after the enslaved blacks overthrew their French masters in 1791. In the past, Haiti has encountered many challenges including repaying loans to French banks to compensate slave owners for losing slaves.

There are concerns about the potential of repeating intervention mistakes in the West Indies country since Kenyan police lack international experience and solely possess 'expertise' in quelling violent protests. Presently, no elected government exists in Haiti, and those who were once senators have already given up their seats. Consequentially Haiti is considered to be a failed country currently under the control of a caretaker government that is already facing pressure from violent gang leaders.

Heading into Haiti means entering one of the troubled areas in the West Indies. The situation in the country strongly challenges collective action and international solidarity. During his speech at the UN General Assembly, Dr Ruto expressed disappointment in the way Haiti has been let down by the international community.

The current unrest in the country is rooted in a history of Western interference, slavery, and resentment. Although gang leader Jimmy ‘Barbecue’ Cherizier has been sanctioned by the Security Council, he presents himself as a revolutionary fighting for a new Haiti that benefits everyone, not just the wealthy minority. Ruto sees Haiti as an opportunity to establish connections with the US and strengthen his geopolitical standing. However, human rights groups caution that the situation in Haiti is perilous as the gangs have become more well-armed, influential, and technologically advanced. These concerns were raised by Gédéon Jean, the director of the Center for Analysis and Research in Human Rights in Port-au-Prince.

You mean what? Ati Haiti paying the French slave owners to compensate them for losing slaves??? God Almighty! Who agreed to that? I think my comprehension is not up to par here...

Yes, that is indeed true! Amazing but, sadly, quite true. Compensating France for the slaves (and property) that Haiti "lost" was the only way that the fledgling new country could be recognized by the international community. All the other countries in the Americas were slaveholding colonies of Europe and many were allied to France, from which Haiti had won its independence. They had to pretty much destroy the country's infrastructure to win that independence, and would have preferred to use its meagre resources to start building back and educating its population of ex-slaves. So France and its allies made sure the country got started off on the wrong foot. Haiti took over 100 years to pay France for the freedom it had won - at great cost.

Haiti 🇭🇹 needs a military force to fight the gangs and criminals not regular police! The Kenyan police will all be slaughtered in a single day!

Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere for a reason they cannot rule themselves always blaming others for their problems .Why does this stupid Kenyan president not educate himself before sending Kenyan police officers to die like dogs in a country that has no hope and is just a waste of time.Like Somalia they need to be left alone lost causes even their own citizens have abandoned them.Stop taking Kenyan lives for granted aping the west it is not like america sends its best over there we need to send them our prisoners and other lost causes people who have nothing to loose like them

Spot on @ Guest. Why do you think other countries are hesitant to go in to Haiti? They cannot justify senseless killings of even one of their own. Even all these Caribbean Island collectively dont want to get involved. They have police forces that dont even have to fly from miles away.
This should be a chance for the French to atone their sins in Haiti.
When I read about atrocities committed by homo-sapiens,against other human being,I always ask my self, " are still evolving from the primitive man? Just look at the technological advancement we have today. All these required human brains. We have done"miracles with SCIENCE".So why cann't we apply the same brain to solve "interpersonal relationships...Aren't we smart enough? Need another million years...?

My brother, while Haiti's leaders bear responsibility for it's current state, understand that France, the US and the banks in both countries pillaged and robbed Haiti's economy for centuries, starting in 1791, all but guaranteeing generations of poverty . As with other countries over which they've had influence, they supported the malleable and the corrupt leaders for their own benefit. The US had no interest in a successful former slave state at the height of slavery. If you ever get a chance, read up on the history of Haiti. It's sad and all to familiar.

@ Mundumugo,it's time for those powerful nations you mentioned to correct their historical evils. That's why I said here is a chance for France to atone it's past sins in Haiti.Make right what they did wrong.
It is also fair to say that these marauding gangs of thugs are Haitians, and not French,or Americans. They are terrorizing their own.One would hope that with painful history, they would "coalesce" and work together and preserve whatever they have, and build on it.
Japan may not have the same history as Haiti, but during world war II it was totally destroyed.Look at where they are now. My point is when does Haiti start doing the rebuilding?

The difference is that the US spent billions after ww2 to help rebuild Japan. It didn't hurt that Japan had actual patriots running the country vs the self serving French poodles that maintained their positions by dint of connections to France-throw in some colorism for good measure.

BTW I think sending Kenyans to Haiti is more Ruto trying to curry favor with the west and a monumentally bad idea. That way they'll support him if he tries to subvert democracy in Kenya.

You may be on to something here @ Mundumugo. What is surprising me is that now some of his cabinet are expressing apprehension over this"assignment". They knew it was in the making, why didnt they stop it.I dont think Ruto has Vito power in such matters. The dailies keep reporting some cracks in his coalition ,he cannot risk any more 'desertion of opinion'.They would have listened to him, unless of course they were in on it,but now they are flowing by public sentiments...What say you?

Joe Kamande (not verified)     Sun, 09/24/2023 @ 10:16pm

Ruto wants to prove how tough he is by surrendering our soldiers for massacre. We have bandits and Alshaab roaming in some places in Kenya. Start with those first. Swallow your pride buddy.

MakOnyango (not verified)     Sun, 09/24/2023 @ 11:04pm

I am sure Ruto and probably the police he will deploy to Haiti have never seen combat. I have and it's not pretty. It affects your night time dreams for the rest of your life.

Kalejinga Ruto is still doing human sacrifices.

Why are people still entertaining this delusional man?

Mbwana (not verified)     Sun, 09/24/2023 @ 11:55pm

Ruto sasa wewe ni sifa unatafuta tuu tena kwa kuwatowa watu mhanga, ewe kweli my friend huko na guts kali kweli kweli. Hata simepita guts za AU ambayo hukuishirikisha hata kidogo.

Are we talking about the lazy, fat, pot bellied bunch of yellow clad fellows who mass daily by the roadsides harassing motorists for bribes suddenly donning camouflage and heading to a war zone? Ruto is truly overreaching himself on this one. We saw how they " fought" the few Al shabaab at Garissa and Nairobi.. truly inspiring!

Sometimes I get very angry when I see some of the things Africans do when dealing with wazungu and this is one of them. Look at the mess Kenya is in when they decided to involve our troops with the never-ending Somali dysfunctionality. The US is in charge of global security and Ruto needs to stay out of it "Fools dare where angels fear to tread"

My husband and I are 47 year resident missionaries in Haiti. Two of our four children were born here; two of our nine grands also. We host and produce Haitians fav TV show aired in Haitian markets from Montreal - Martinique and throughout Haiti. Our show got President Jovenel Moise elected, in his words. We were senior advisors to him, and still grieve his brutal execution by oligarch hired Columbian mercenaries.

Corruption is all of Haiti's problem, which is why Jovenel was assassinated; he refused to be corrupt. Four billion US is given annually to Haiti for roads, electricity, schools, water, and yet Haitians have NONE of these things. Schools r far below standard and even "public" schools are not free. There is no electricity, we must generate our own w solar panels or generators. No running water, and no potable water.

Government "awards" contracts for these luxuries to their corrupt oligarch friends and the kickback is 50% and no work is fulfilled. Narco X President Aristide and his oligarch buddies Vorbes chased away all manufacturers and jobs in the 90s and then hired young men to b terrorist militias for them. Now he opposes intervention b/c he wants and "transitional" government so he can have access at the 4 billion. Aristide uses his billions in blood money derived from kidnapping, trafficking weapons and drugs, corruption to "lobby" US Black Caucus and Democrats. They then legislate favorably for his wicked party. He is the father of all gangs and the founder of all destabilization. He made sure to fake Covid and publicly go to Cuba when Jovenel was killed; we all know why he was out of the country to claim no involvement, but he is the chief of all assassins.

Can Kenya help Haiti? Only if they refuse to be corrupted by oligarchs who will try to buy their complicity w gangs and involve them in trafficking. We wait for your help

@ Yvonne Trimble, what you have stated here is true.I have watched afew documentaries on Haiti ,and they corroborate your statements. It sure sounds like hell on earth...Haitian-Hell.
These are armed gangs. So I have to assume that Kenyans will shoot first.Corruption is also rampant in the Kenya police. So I also hope that they refuse to be corrupted. But certainly afew will fall to the temptation.Nonetheless, this is a situation where Haitians wouldn't dare say," Dont meddle in our internal affairs".I hope the good Haitians work with the Kenyans, and not aid and abate the "bad" brothers and sisters simply because of perceived"foreign invasion."

Waterwater (not verified)     Mon, 09/25/2023 @ 03:32pm

This is stupid. Tuko na serikali ya ujinga SANA! WHO THE HECK VOTED FOR THESE PEOPLE. THESE POLICEMEN ARE NEEDED IN KENYA. Kuna kimbelembele ingine ya hii gava ina udhi tu

SimamaImara (not verified)     Mon, 09/25/2023 @ 05:17pm

God bless Haiti. I hope Kenya police learn French quick. It is a gang infested nation but the ppl I have met out here are nice.
France did them terribly wrong but they have a chance to fix their own nation. Location means drugs and guns are easily accessible. Plus human trafficking

I think one can get by with English, just like in France.Their creole might be alittle difficulty, but if they stay there long enough who knows.Which brings me to the question how long will they stay in Haiti.Operation" Fagia- Majambazi" has to last afew months to be effective. You just dont go in there and you are out in a month. And the longer one stays, the riskier it gets unless they get ample support from the locals and the international community.

Mbwana (not verified)     Tue, 09/26/2023 @ 01:06am

So far in the entire universe its now a phenomenal that all the Francophone countries are falling apart. I hope which one is next. As from last week it began to smell smoking in Congo Brazzaville. In Cameron, fire woods are stocking up as well. Despite that presenting yourself as a Kibaraka (western puppet) in front of other leaders and AU at large is not a good picture by any means. Its also a riskiest affairs that may hunt you down to the grave
