The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has acquired newly refurbished Z9 helicopters from the China Aviation Technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC).
During the commissioning ceremony on Wednesday, October 30, Kenya Army Commander Lieutenant General David Tarus emphasized the importance of this collaboration between the Kenyan military and the Chinese state-owned aviation company. The partnership extends beyond mere equipment procurement, including technology transfer, joint training initiatives, and strategic cooperation. Addressing military officers in Nairobi, Lieutenant Tarus highlighted how this acquisition would enhance the army's operational effectiveness in maintaining regional security.
He stressed the importance of international collaboration, noting that success in military aviation depends not only on advanced technology but also on strong diplomatic relationships. The Z9 helicopter, a versatile military aircraft based on the Eurocopter AS365 Dauphin, significantly bolsters Kenya's military aviation capabilities. With its capacity to transport up to ten military personnel, the aircraft features enhanced composite materials for improved military functionality.
The helicopter boasts impressive specifications, including a maximum takeoff weight of 4,100 kg and two Zhuzhou Aeroengine Factory WZ-8A turboshaft engines, each generating 848 horsepower. It achieves a maximum speed of 190 mph and maintains an operational range of up to 620 miles. CATIC Vice President Li Houding expresses optimism about the partnership's potential and voices their commitment to accelerating progress through shared aviation technology expertise. The collaboration aims to enhance Kenya Army Aviation's capabilities through joint research, development, and maintenance practices.
This acquisition places Kenya among several African nations that operate Chinese-made military helicopters, including Cameroon, Djibouti, Mali, Mauritania, Namibia, and Zambia. The procurement comes shortly after President William Ruto's agreement with the United States for eight Huey helicopters, scheduled for delivery between late 2024 and early 2025. The commissioning ceremony drew high-ranking military officials, including Major General Luka Kutto, Brigadier Jackson Lesaiyo, Brigadier Ali Dahir, and Colonel Antony Maina, alongside CATIC representatives and service members.
The Z9's versatility in roles ranging from medical evacuation to combat operations, combined with its advanced weaponry capabilities, positions it as a valuable addition to Kenya's military arsenal.

@BFW, you've wrong info. China will get you what you ask and pay for. If you want cheap, you'll get it; and if you want quality, they've it too.
I wouldn’t fly in these things. China isn’t known for quality.
