Engineers' Institution Denounces Jumwa's Appointment to Kenya Roads Board

The Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) has raised concerns regarding the recent appointment of Aisha Jumwa as the chair of the Kenya Roads Board (KRB).

In a statement issued on January 27, the IEK argues that Jumwa's selection is not only unqualified but also contravenes the regulations established by the Kenya Roads Board Act No. 7. The IEK firmly asserts that the appointment process failed to adhere to the legal requirements mandated by the KRB Act, which stipulates that the non-executive chairperson must be appointed from amongst nominees put forward by designated organizations.

The organizations include the IEK, the Automobile Association of Kenya, and the Kenya Transport Association, among others. Jumwa's lack of representation from any of these bodies has raised serious questions about the validity of her appointment. Highlighting their concerns, the IEK points out that Jumwa does not possess the necessary professional background in civil, structural, or transport engineering.

This lack of expertise, they contend, diminishes her capability to effectively oversee the KRB’s critical technical operations, which include road maintenance, setting construction standards, and ensuring project efficiency. The KRB plays a vital role in Kenya’s infrastructure management, making the qualifications of its leadership paramount. The IEK emphasizes that appointments to key positions within the board should prioritize individuals with relevant engineering experience to meet the technical demands of the role.

They call for the immediate revocation of Jumwa's appointment and urge the need for a qualified individual to lead KRB in compliance with the law. IEK highlights the importance of maintaining professional standards and regulatory compliance in public institutions, particularly regarding political appointments.
