Kibra Drug Bust: Police Nab Four, Recover Suspected Bhang
Police arrested four suspects and seized suspected bhang during a weekend operation in Makina, Kibra Sub-County, as part of an intensified crackdown on illicit drugs and illegal alcohol.
The National Police Service said officers recovered three bales believed to contain bhang and impounded a vehicle allegedly used to transport the drugs. The suspects are being held pending arraignment in court.
Police officials said the operation forms part of a broader effort to disrupt the supply and distribution of illegal substances. They urged members of the public to report suspicious activity through toll-free police lines and anonymous platforms, including the #FichuaKwaDCI initiative, noting that community cooperation is essential to effective enforcement.
Illicit alcohol remains a persistent problem in many parts of the country. These products are often manufactured and sold outside regulated systems and include home-distilled spirits, counterfeit branded alcohol, and smuggled imports. Authorities say their low cost and availability make them attractive, despite serious health risks such as poisoning, blindness, and death.
Health and security agencies have linked the widespread use of illicit alcohol to increased crime, domestic violence, and reduced economic productivity. Officials say the impact extends beyond individual harm, affecting families, communities, and local economies.
The issue has featured prominently at recent Jukwaa la Usalama security forums. Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen described illegal brews and narcotics as a threat to national security while addressing congregants at AIC Riwo Church in Cherangany, Trans Nzoia County. He called on chiefs and assistant chiefs to strengthen enforcement at the local level.
Murkomen said Trans Nzoia is among the counties most affected by illegal alcohol and drug abuse, based on recent security assessments. He warned that inaction or collusion by administrators would not be tolerated and said coordinated action could reduce the prevalence of the problem.
The government says the renewed operations are aimed at protecting public health and improving security. Police operations are expected to continue in Nairobi and other identified areas, alongside efforts to increase public reporting.
