Uhuru Kenyatta Rejects Claims He Directed Gachagua to Convene Mt Kenya Meeting
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has dismissed claims circulating on social media that link him to political mobilisation efforts in the Mt Kenya region, describing the reports as false and unauthorised.
In a statement released on Thursday, Kenyatta denied allegations that he had directed Democracy for Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua to organise a meeting of regional leaders. His communications secretary, Kanze Dena Mararo, said the messages being shared online did not originate from Kenyatta or reflect his political position.
“The Office of the 4th President, Uhuru Kenyatta, has observed with concern the deliberate circulation of false and misleading content on social media platforms,” the statement said. It urged members of the public to verify information before sharing it further.
The office clarified that any official communication from the former President would be issued only through verified channels associated with his office or the Jubilee Party. It stresses that statements circulating outside these platforms should be treated as inaccurate.
The response follows increased political activity in Mt Kenya, where Gachagua has been advocating for the consolidation of the region’s voting bloc under his leadership. Several viral posts claimed Kenyatta was involved in these efforts, while another widely shared message dated 26 January alleged that the former President was unwell and distressed by the country’s political situation.
Kenyatta’s office rejected these claims in full, warning that the spread of fabricated information undermines public trust and diminishes the dignity of the Office of the 4th President. In recent months, Kenyatta has distanced himself from Gachagua’s political camp and signalled Jubilee Party’s support for former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i as its preferred candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
Jubilee has also undertaken a major restructuring of its leadership as it prepares for the next election cycle. On 22 January, the party announced Jeremiah Kioni as Deputy Party Leader and appointed former Narok MP Richard Ole Kenta as Secretary General.
Other appointments included Zack Kinuthia as Deputy Secretary General, Yassin Noor Haji as National Organising Secretary, and Vincent Mogaka Kimoki as Chairperson. Additional roles were filled in areas such as elections management, grassroots mobilisation and policy development.
