Five Kenyan Soldiers Killed in Suspected Al Shabaab Attack in Lamu
At least five Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) soldiers were killed while six others sustained injuries in a suspected Al Shabaab attack at Kwa Omolo area in Lamu County on Wednesday.
Sources said the military officers were on a routine security patrol when the lorry carrying them ran over an improvised explosive device (IED).
Witnesses said that the truck was extensively damaged during the attack. The Department of Defence is yet to issue a statement on the Wednesday morning attack.
An estimated 100 security officers have so far lost their lives in similar attacks by the Somalia-based terror group in Lamu, Garissa, Wajir and Mandera counties.
The attack comes barely days after locals said they had spotted more than 200 heavily armed group suspected to be Al Shabaab militants at Belasange-Jima 2, within Boni Forest in Lamu West.
A multi-agency security team has since been sent to the area to pursue the militants who are believed to be within the vicinity
