Uhuru to Open the Refurbished Kisumu Port

President Kenyatta is next week scheduled to officially open the refurbished Kisumu port.

Uhuru will commission the facility that was renovated at a cost of KSh3 billion on Tuesday, according to Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang Nyong’o.

Operations at the port have already kicked off with MV Uhuru, a cargo vessel at the facility, shipping oil to neighboring Uganda. Port authorities said more than 800,000 liters of diesel were loaded in 22 wagons from the Kisumu depot and exported to Uganda last week.

Governor Nyong’o said that the refurbished Kisumu port will change the fortune of the lakeside city and the region with the facility expected to generate income amounting to millions of shillings annually.

The revival of the port, which has been dormant for over 20 years, signals the resumption of bulk exports to Uganda and Tanzania through Lake Victoria.
