President Kenyatta has given Rwanda a parcel of land in Naivasha to build a dry port for its cargo, according to reports.

The move is aimed at easing transportation of goods from the Mombasa seaport to Kigali as well as reduce the cost of ferrying cargo between Kenya and Rwanda, a landlocked country.

Speaking to The New Times, Rwanda's Foreign Affairs Minister Vincent Biruta said his country was keen to cut back logistical expenses and address challenges of delayed cargo clearance prompted by congestion and subsequent backlog.

A team drawn from Rwanda's High Commission in Kenya recently toured the Naivasha Inland Container Depot to assess the ongoing works.

"The Rwandan government is in consultation with the private sector to establish ways to make the most of the dry port," Biruta said.

Rwanda’s Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Charge of East African Community Manasseh Nshuti said transportation of cargo Naivasha to Kigali will be easier with the construction of the inland port.

“Naivasha to Mombasa is 560km. Goods will use rail reducing road transport which is more expensive and time-consuming. We also have two options, Naivasha to Kigali by road, or we can use Naivasha to Kisumu via road which is about 200 km, then barges from Kisumu to Port Bell in Uganda. By sea it will be cheaper,” Nshuti quipped.

Uganda was also offered land in Naivasha to build a similar port during President Yoweri Museveni’s state visit to Kenya in March last year.

There is no Free land or lunch in Kenya. Uhuru must have received something from Rwanda (in Exchange for this so-called "Gift Land").

A town will emerge with leaking sewage, potholes, muggers and informal settlements. And a few formal jobs.

To this day there are still squatters who remain landless as a result of the rift valley ethnic clashes yet we can afford to gift and not sell land to foreigners. In Nairobi several structures were flattened and occupants left exposed to the elements specifically rain and cold yet we are handing out land to foreigners in a country where a majority of the population do not own land .

I agree. Misplaced priorities. the rich always favor the rich and let the poor struggle alone. Landless Kenya's should occupy that land. it is not his to give away. His family got it for free. Landless Kenyans need it more than Kagame.

How do you gift public land to a foreign country?????? Kenya does not have any extra land to be gifted. The corrupt politicians, government employees and the rich and connected have already stolen pretty much everything. We have millions of our citizen who are landless fuming at this gifting. What country is this????????? If there is any deals which will benefit the wananchi then the land should be leased out or sold at fair market value!!!!!!!!!!!!Is this is a business transaction or some BS about gifting. Stop aiding further corruption!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Enough.

He should give them all of Naivasha to run. You will see wonders. A clean, green city with services will be there in no time. Visit Kigali and compare with Nairobi.

This is what australia/Uk/greece/dubai/italy have done to bring investors close to their country so it's not news.

Worse, still merge Kenya with Rwanda. Kigali is clean, Nairobi is dirty, but it's because of our own failings.

  13. mkenya halisiMay 17, 2020

@Ex diasporas yes kigali is clean which is good n don't forget kiambu gdp is that of rwanda as a country.I mean Kiambu is richer than Rwanda as a whole country so don't be so negative about yr country kenya.

Mkenya halisi, I cry for my beloved country. Kigali has a small economy, but it's habitable. I'm not sure about Nairobi.
