Commuters Face Increased Toll Rates on Nairobi Expressway

The Nairobi Expressway toll rates have undergone revisions by the Government, increasing charges for motorists.

Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has officially approved an increase in the fare for travelling from Westlands to Mlolongo. Previously set at Sh360, the new rate now stands at Sh500. As stated in a special Gazette notice issued on December 19, 2023, this adjustment is a result of the depreciation of the Shilling against the United States Dollar.

According to the notice, the toll charges for the Nairobi Expressway have been authorized in compliance with section 4B (3) of the Public Roads Tolls Act. The approved rates state that drivers will now have to pay a minimum fee of Sh170 for utilizing the 27km stretch of the Expressway, as opposed to the previous rate of Sh120. Additionally, Murkomen emphasizes that these toll charges may be revised in the future, taking into account fluctuations in the exchange rate and alterations in the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

With a price tag of Sh88 billion, the Expressway boasts 10 exits strategically positioned at various points such as Mlolongo, the Standard Gauge Railway, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, the Eastern Bypass, the Southern Bypass, Capital Centre, Haile Selassie Avenue, Museum Hill, and Westlands. The revised fees dictate that individuals travelling from Westlands to JKIA and the Eastern Bypass will incur a charge of Sh420, while those commuting between Westlands and the Southern Bypass will be subject to a fee of Sh330. The fare for a journey from Haile Selassie to Capital Centre will now amount to Sh250, and the cost of travelling from Westlands to Museum Hill will be Sh170.

To travel from Museum Hill to the Mlolongo exit, passengers are required to pay a fee of Sh500. The fare for a journey from Museum Hill to Syokimau has been adjusted to Sh410. Moreover, the cost of travelling from Museum Hill to JKIA and Eastern Bypass is Sh330, while the fare for the Southern Bypass route is Sh250. For those heading towards Haile Selassie and Capital Hill exit, the charge will be Sh170.
