Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) is solidifying its status as a leading aviation hub, with international passenger arrivals rising by 1.9% in 2024 compared to the previous year, according to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS).
The latest figures reveal that 1,507,836 visitors arrived at JKIA last year, an increase from 1,478,396 in 2023. This upward trend in arrivals can largely be attributed to heightened demand for air travel and the expanding presence of international airlines operating at the airport. Notably, the months of August, July, and December saw the highest passenger volumes, with arrivals numbering 155,291, 153,961, and 140,994, respectively. Conversely, April recorded the lowest influx, with only 96,946 passengers arriving.
The Kenyan government has initiated a series of measures designed to improve the passenger experience and enhance airport operations. Recently, President William Ruto’s Cabinet approved significant infrastructure upgrades at JKIA. Planned improvements include modernizing baggage handling systems, enhancing stormwater drainage, and developing access roads, covered walkways, and better air conditioning and signage.
Additionally, the government is focusing on the regulation of meet-and-greet services within the airport. Only licensed facilitators will be allowed to operate, aiming to boost security and maintain order within the terminal. These initiatives align with a broader strategy to position JKIA as a top global aviation destination while optimizing operational efficiency and passenger security.
To facilitate a smoother travel experience, plans are underway to expand the number of immigration booths and staff, alongside the introduction of electronic gates. These advancements are expected to alleviate congestion and expedite passenger clearance, further enhancing the overall travel experience at JKIA.
