Nairobi Traders Ordered to Submit Weighing Equipment for Inspection

Nairobi City County has directed all traders within a 20-kilometre radius of designated centres to present their weighing and measuring equipment for mandatory inspection between August and November 2025.
The phased verification exercise is being carried out by the County Directorate of Weights and Measures to ensure compliance with legal standards in commercial transactions. Inspection centres include police stations, social halls, chiefs’ offices, shopping precincts and county administration buildings across sub-counties such as Westlands, Kibra, Dagoretti, Langata, Roysambu, Kasarani and Embakasi.
Equipment with a capacity above 500 kilogrammes will not be transported to inspection sites. Instead, such instruments will be inspected on location, provided the trader notifies the county inspector in writing at least three days before the scheduled date. The written notice must include the equipment’s type, capacity and location.
The schedule began in Embakasi Central from 18 to 22 August, followed by Embakasi East from 25 August to 2 September. Kasarani’s inspection took place from 3 to 22 September. Roysambu will follow in late September and early October, covering areas including Zimmerman, Lumumba Drive, Marurui, Rasters and Ngumba.
Langata inspections are set for early to mid-October, with designated centres at Nairobi West NCC Offices, Soweto Social Hall, Kenya Business Verification Hall, Ngei Chief’s Office and Karen Ward Office. Kibra inspections will take place between 16 and 22 October at the Kibera DO’s Office, and the Lindi, Sarang’ombe and Laini Saba Chief’s Offices. Starehe will host inspections from 23 to 29 October at Kenya Meat Commission grounds, Mariguini, Sanasana and Ngara.
Westlands will follow in late October and early November, with visits to Kangemi Market, Mountain View NCC Offices and Kawangware. The final phase will be held throughout November in Dagoretti North and South, with centres including Kabiro Ward Office, Uthiru Shopping Centre, Ndumboini, Riruta, Waithaka, Mutuini and Dagoretti Market.
According to the county, the inspections are intended to promote accuracy and fairness in trade by verifying that all commercial weighing instruments meet legal requirements. Traders are required to adhere strictly to the inspection schedule to avoid penalties or disruption to business operations.
