Netflix will no longer offer its free plan in Kenya Starting next month.
Since 2021, thousands of subscribers have benefited from complimentary access to Netflix, but a new decision will shake things up for them. Netflix disclosed in a recent message to its users that the subscriber's membership will be automatically cancelled upon terminating the free service. To continue enjoying their favourite content, such subscribers will need to upgrade to an appropriate paid subscription plan which starts from as low as Sh200 per month.
This change marks the end of the free plan that was introduced in Kenya in September 2021, making it the first country in the world to have this offering from Netflix. By shutting down free memberships, the streaming giant plans to exploit the growing demand for streaming services and attract more potential users to its overflowing collection of films and television series.
“On November 1, 2023, the Free Plan will no longer be available and your membership will end. If you want to cancel, no action is required. Your membership will be automatically cancelled when the free plan ends. If you want to keep watching, upgrade to one of our paid plans. Starting from as low as Sh200 per month, you can unlock all shows and movies, more features and the option to watch on your phone, TV or laptop.” reads the email sent to subscribers
Netflix's recent decision signals a change in its strategy to focus on converting free users into paying clients following a reduction of subscription fees in Kenya by almost 37%. This decision comes as competition in the industry continues to rise for the streaming platform. Netflix recently reaffirmed its commitment to retaining loyal customers while simultaneously reaching out to and onboarding new customers.
