President Uhuru Kenyatta's campaign rally in Mandera County on Saturday turned into chaos after supporters of rival governor candidates clashed.
Supporters of Jubilee's Governor Ali Roba engaged in a stone pelting affair with those of his gubernatorial opponent, Hassan Noor of Economic Freedom Party (EFP).
The two sets of supporters engaged in a war of words before things turned chaotic, forcing police officers to lob teargas canisters to disperse them.
Several people are said to have sustained injuries and rushed to different health centers for medical attention.
Garre Council of Elders in Mandera County has in the past accused Jubilee of undermining the wish of the community to chose leaders through a negotiated democracy plan.
In August last year, the Council of Elders agreed on a model of rotational leadership blocking sub-clans in the community from holding one political seat for more than one term.
In line with this, Governor Roba, Senator Billow Kerrow and a couple of MPs were expected not to contest in this year's polls, having exhausted their one term.
The Elders were forced to launch the EFP party and field candidates in all seats, after the incumbents failed to honor the negotiated democracy plan, something that has created deep political enmity between the two factions.
