MPs Threaten to Impeach Trade Cabinet Secretary Adan Mohammed

A section of Members of Parliament have threatened to impeach Trade and Industrialization Cabinet Secretary Adan Mohammed.

The MPs said they will table an ouster motion against Adan if President Kenyatta doesn't fire him over recent revelations of poisonous contraband sugar in the market.

Led by Lugari MP Ayub Savula, the leaders urged the President to send home the CS over failure to prevent the harmful product from entering the Kenyan market.

"The CS should resign. If he fails to do so, the President should sack him. President Uhuru acted swiftly on the NYS scandal by sacking top officials. We expect him to speedily sack Adan," Savula stated.

Savula's call was echoed by Vihiga Woman Representative Beatrice Adagala, who accused the CS of negligence. She also called for cancellation of sugar import licences issued to millers.

"The country’s recent sugar import windows should be audited for potential abuse by phony traders who may have taken advantage to ship in illegal consignments.

"Kenya Bureau of Standards staff who cleared the unfit sugar for domestic consumption should be investigated," Adagala noted.

Matungu MP Justus Murunga said the CS has one week to step aside, failure to which they will present an impeachment motion against him before the floor of the House.

On Thursday, Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) denied claims by Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i that the contraband sugar recently seized in different parts of the country tested positive for harmful substances such as mercury and copper.
