Nema Targets Westlands’ Ukay Mall in Ongoing Demolition of Illegal Buildings

Ukay Mall located in Nairobi's Westlands area is among buildings targeted in the ongoing demolition of illegal structures in the city.
A National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) report dated June 26th named buildings and structures found to be sitting on riparian land within Nairobi county.
The structures include Fuata Nyayo informal settlement, Plot No 209/12227 off Mbagathi Way, LR No 209/12184 along Lower Kabete Road, LR No 209/18650 along Arboretum Drive, Riverside Drive Taj Apartments, Village Market waste water plant, Westgate car park and Nakumatt Ukay car park and the commercial building.
A three-month notice issued to the owners of the structures expired on Sunday and it is just a matter of time before they are flattened, the Star reports.
NEMA says more than 4,000 buildings constructed on wetlands within Nairobi county have been earmarked for demolition.
The exercise is being conducted by an inter-agency team comprising of officials from NEMA, Water Resources Authority, the Nairobi government, and the Ministry of Environment among others.
So far, the authorities have brought down Shell petrol station and Java outlet in Kileleshwa, and Sh2 billion Southend Mall located along Lang'ata road.

NAKUMATT UKAY was marked with red X even at the time of construction during the infamous looting/impunity era of Moi.It has survived through corruption which i think has surfaced the real value of the property. But since druglord Mwau left the company, the Indian owners have been banking all the sales money abroad as they prepare to runaway at any moment.
