Politician Steve Mbogo Speaks Out After DCI Impounded His Illegally Imported Range Rover

Nairobi politician Steve Mbogo has spoken after his luxury vehicle was impounded by authorities.

Mbogo's white Range Rover was seized by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Friday over allegations of tax evasion.

The DCI also said that the high-end car's registration plate; KCL 830A belonged to another vehicle- a Toyota Probox.

Speaking to a local news outlet, the politician says he is unaware that the car was illegally imported.

Mbogo also says that he purchased the fuel guzzler from a local automobile dealer and experienced no problems registering it with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

“When you go to a bazaar and buy a vehicle that has its registration plate numbers ready, the only other thing you will be expected to do, is register it on the NTSA portal, and if it is legitimate, then there won’t be any issues registering the vehicle. I did not experience any troubles registering the car."

"So, if there were issues with its registration plate, NTSA should have informed me that there was another vehicle, which legitimately owned the registration plate number. That, did not happen,” says Mbogo.

“If anything, I have been driving this vehicle for two years now, and if the [registration and security] systems were working well, then the discrepancy should have been settled a long time ago,” he adds.

He points out that he was shocked when the DCI informed him that the vehicle was under investigation over excise duty evasion.

He further says he has all documents to prove that he is innocent.

Let us call a Spade a Spade. This guy has a point. NTSA should not shift blame for its own failures elsewhere. They should be the ones under investigation by the DCI.
