Uhuru Honors Marathon Great Eliud Kipchoge with Order of the Golden Heart Award

Marathon great Eliud Kipchoge has been awarded the Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (EGH) medal.

The 34-year-old marathon record holder was honored with the top award by President Kenyatta during Mashujaa Day celebrations in Mombasa on Sunday.

Kipchoge was recognized for being the first man to complete a marathon in less than two hours during the recent INEOS 1:59 Challenge held in Vienna, Austria.

Kenyatta invited Kipchoge to join him on the podium and conferred upon him the honor, describing him as “living legend and the greatest of our time.”

EGH is the second class title in the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya awards, the highest category of state awards. The award is second only to Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart (CGH), which is mainly reserved for Heads of State.

“On this day we celebrate those who have built Kenya with their bravery, their sacrifice, and their fidelity; we celebrate and honor those that go above and beyond the call of duty,” said Kenyatta in his speech.

“Today we honor the Kenyans called to serve around the world, our Kenyans in the diaspora who continue to be our brand ambassadors in countries far from their home and who continue to support millions of Kenyans in their homeland.”

Deputy President William Ruto, ODM leader Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka, Chief Justice David Maraga, and Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho are among the top leaders who attended the event held at the Mama Ngina Waterfront grounds.

Kenyan athletes don't need githeri man honors! They need practice facilities, thet need their allowances to be paid in time, they want a world class athletics meeting in Kenya....
Uhuru just waits for the athletes to struggle and prepare themselves to represent the country then he invites them to state hose to hand them the flag. The Kenya government could have arranged for Kipchoge to run the marathon in Kenya but as usual Uhuru harvests where he has not planted!

My fellow Kenyans, when did we learn to harbor soo much hate? Let Kipchoge shine in his glory. If he himself "feels" honored, who are you to complain of the same?

Well said. If Kipchoge did feel it was right to be honored, I'm sure he would have conveyed that. There some people in our society who choose negativity and drags it along their lives instead of being part of a solution

@ I tip my hat to you@ Kapten Tony. This was no small event. This is the president of acountry taking time to honor your achievement. And those pecks are a preserve of a few privileged Kenyans. As for some cash,or tangible reward,KIpchoge,Iam sure was rewarded well,by his sponsors.Having said this, I still would like the government to make sure that our athletes do not retire in destitute.Reminds me when the Ugandan lady Halima Naakayi won gold in the just concluded WCgames in Doha Quatar, she asked Museveni (government) to buy her ahouse, like he had done for other Ugandans with similar achievement.
Of course Iam mindful that there are athletes who squander their earnings without regard for the future, but still if they have proudly flown the Kenyan flag, they should not be left to rot.
