Former Nyeri MP PG Muriithi Cremated in Accordance with His Wishes

The late former Nyeri MP Peter Gichohi Muriithi, popularly known as PG, has been cremated in accordance with his wishes.

The body of Muriithi was incinerated in a low-key ceremony attended by a few family members and MPs Ngunjiri Wambugu (Nyeri Town) and Jeremiah Kioni (Ndaragwa).

His son Andrew Gitau said his father, who passed away at Outspan Hospital on Tuesday after a long battle with diabetes, wished to be cremated within three days after his death and the ashes buried at his rural home in Thunguma village and a tree planted at the site.

“His wish was to be cremated as soon as possible and probably within a specific period of three days and have a memorial service later,” Gitau said.

“In his wish, my father had indicated he was not interested on spending money on an elaborate funeral ceremony. He instead pointed out that any funds be channeled to Riamukuwe Children Home to assist the needy children."

Muriithi run for the Nyeri Town parliamentary seat in 1997 on a Kanu party ticket but lost to Wanyiri Kihoro. He clinched the seat under National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) in 2003, representing Nyeri Town in parliament until 2007 when he lost to Esther Murugi. Following the defeat, the deceased retired from active politics to concentrate on farming, real estate, and insurance business.

President Kenyatta eulogized Muriithi as a maverick politician and nationalist who championed equity and justice for all Kenyans, adding that he leaves behind a strong legacy of development in Nyeri Town.

“The residents of Nyeri Town will forever remember the Hon Muriithi for his strong development record especially for the many transformational projects he initiated during his tenure as the area legislator,” Uhuru said.

What a thoughtful and considerate person. Didn’t burden those left behind with unnecessary burial expenses and the associated family and political drama. This should be a national trend!
