Kiraitu Murungi Lands a State Job, Days After Losing the Meru Governor Seat

Outgoing Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi has landed a State job, days after he lost the gubernatorial election to outgoing Woman Representative Kawira Mwangaza.

Murungi was on Monday sworn in by Chief Justice Martha Koome as a commissioner of the Kenya Law Reform Commission (KLRC), according to Nation.

“It is true I have been appointed a commissioner at the KLRC and will take up the role immediately,” Murungi told Nation.

KLRC's mandate is to review all the laws of Kenya to ensure that it is modernized, relevant, and harmonized in accordance with the law. 

Others appointed to the commission by Koome are Rose Janet Ayugi, Linda Musilivi Murila, Duncan Okello and Prof. Paul Musili Wambua.

Murungi, who was defending his seat under the Devolution Empowerment Party, emerged third in the Meru governorship race with 110,814 votes.

Contesting on an independent ticket, Mwangaza was declared the winner after garnering 209,148 votes ahead of her closest competitor Senator Mithika Linturi of UDA who came in second with 183,859 votes.

This is the first time Murungi, 70, has lost an election since he joined politics in 1990 and served as the MP for South Imenti from 1992 to 2007.

In 2013, the Harvard University alumnus was elected the first senator of Meru County and went on to clinch the county’s gubernatorial seat in the 2017 general election.
