On October 21, 2024, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Nairobi achieved a breakthrough in a high-profile burglary case that occurred in the affluent Westlands area.
The incident took place on September 24, 2024, and involved a South Sudanese national who returned home to find her residence in disarray, her house help missing, and a substantial amount of cash and valuables stolen. The homeowner promptly reported the theft to the DCI Kilimani offices, initiating an immediate investigation. The stolen items included USD 24,500 (approximately Sh3,659,000), an iPhone 15, a Samsung Z Flip, and various pieces of jewellery.
‘’In the incident which took place on September 24, the house owner (a South Sudanese national) arrived at her home located along Rhapta Road Westlands to find her house girl missing, and along with her USD 24,500, an iPhone 15, a Samsung Z Flip and several pieces of jewellery,’’ the DCI statement reads in part.
Detectives employed meticulous forensic tracing and intelligence-gathering techniques which ultimately led them to the suspects' hideout in Kawangware. After a month-long manhunt, three suspects were apprehended: Lenah Khamatioli (28), Ian Kavaya (28), and Peninah Mutola (32). Upon their arrest, law enforcement recovered a range of newly acquired items believed to be proceeds from the crime. These included a Boxer motorcycle, a 55-inch Vitron TV, a Hanmac microwave, an HP laptop, an NNix cooker oven, a 6kg Pro gas cylinder, a five-seater sofa, a mattress, two watches, and three brand-new Samsung A50 phones.
Authorities also confiscated an agreement for the purchase of a parcel of land valued at Sh 423,000 in Kapkangani, Nandi County which suggests potential property investment using the stolen funds. The suspects remain in custody as detectives continue their search for possible accomplices and any remaining stolen items. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities in their neighbourhoods. Last week, DCI apprehended five suspects in connection with two separate fraud schemes. In Nakuru County, three individuals were arrested for impersonating employees of a prominent cement company and offering discounted products to unsuspecting customers.
The operation yielded various electronic devices used in the scam. Concurrently, two suspects with prior criminal records were detained in Makueni County for deceiving unemployed teachers while posing as Ministry of Education officials. Both operations resulted in the confiscation of multiple mobile phones and other incriminating evidence. The DCI has stated that investigations are ongoing with the possibility of additional arrests. All suspects remain in custody pending formal charges.
