Former President Uhuru Kenyatta delivered an impassioned plea for national unity at the installation ceremony of Bishop Peter Kamani in the Catholic Diocese of Embu on Saturday.
In his address, Kenyatta emphasized that while democratic politics plays a vital role in Kenya's governance, it should not become a source of national division or hinder the country's development. The ceremony has drawn an impressive array of dignitaries, including President William Ruto, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The religious leadership was well-represented by the Apostolic Nuncio to Kenya, Archbishop Hubertus Matheus van Megen, alongside numerous local bishops.
Speaking as an honoured guest, Kenyatta articulated a vision of collective nation-building that transcends political boundaries. "I ask you all, my fellow Kenyans, to shun politics and embrace unity," he declared, emphasizing that shared destiny should take precedence over political differences. His message particularly resonates given the current political climate as he stressed the imperative of fostering national prosperity through cooperation rather than division.
Kenyatta took the opportunity to commend the Church's instrumental role in Kenya's ongoing reconciliation efforts. He particularly praised its capacity to heal societal rifts and unite diverse communities, describing it as a consistent source of hope for the nation. Kenyatta's message resonates deeply with the ceremony's themes of service and community as he urges Kenyans to prioritize collective progress over political differences.
The ceremony also saw former Deputy President Gachagua meeting Ruto face-to-face for the first time since his removal from office last month. Ruto arrived with Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, while Uhuru came later, accompanied by the regional governor, Cecily Mbarire. Since leaving office, Uhuru has avoided public events and has only been seen leading regional peace efforts as a special envoy. Ahead of the installation, Gachagua emphasized biblical quotes, highlighting Matthew 9:37-38.
