Opposition leader Raila Odinga has reiterated the crucial need for unity within his political base in Nyanza, irrespective of the outcome of his candidacy for the chair of the African Union Commission (AUC).
Odinga is vying for this influential position against Djibouti’s foreign minister Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and former Madagascan foreign minister Richard James Randriamandrato. The election is scheduled for next month as a successor is sought for Moussa Faki Mahamat. As he temporarily transfers leadership of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o, Odinga faces mixed reactions among party officials and supporters regarding a proposed broad-based government coalition with President William Ruto, which has raised concerns about possible factional divisions within his following.
Notably, Odinga has garnered backing from the State, with President Ruto and government officials actively campaigning to support his AUC candidacy. He urges his constituents to maintain unity, emphasizing that collective strength would be essential in his potential absence. He conveys that leaders from across Africa have approached him regarding the AUC position, expressing their concern about the continent's direction and their belief in his leadership capabilities to steer it properly.
During his speech at the funeral of his cousin, Paul Richard Oudia Okello, in Nyangera, Yimbo, Siaya County, Odinga reassured supporters that he would remain engaged in Kenyan politics regardless of the AUC election results. He maintained that a victory would not distance him from his home country, noting that Addis Ababa is only a few hours away. Odinga was joined by several prominent leaders, including Siaya Governor James Orengo, Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga, Bondo MP Gideon Ochanda, and Siaya County Assembly Speaker George Okode.
He calls upon his followers to connect with their roots and uphold the spirit of unity, emphasizing a commitment to avoid the pitfalls set by detractors.
Employing parables, Odinga took a jab at former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua highlighting the irony of Gachagua’s wife praying for his success in the AUC race despite earlier efforts to undermine him. Both Odinga and Orengo reiterated the importance of integrity and the courage to speak truth to power within the Luo community.
They reaffirmed their determination to confront pressing issues, including abductions, with Odinga urging President Ruto to address the challenges that have arisen in 2024. Dr Oburu voiced criticism towards human rights advocates for their selective calls for justice, highlighting an apparent lack of outrage over the deaths of individuals in Kibera, Embakasi, and Kawangware during protests. Orengo praised Odinga’s leadership, cautioning that decisions should not be made hastily without thorough contemplation.
In conclusion, Odinga's appeal for unity and resilience resonates strongly as his supporters navigate the complexities of political alliances and leadership transitions. His pursuit of the AUC chairmanship marks a pivotal point in his political journey, carrying implications not only for Kenya but also for the broader African continent.
This Dupch needs to retire and save us the Katanga na mupila crap. He is too old to sanely hold any position anywhere in this Universe. At times it is ok to accept you are too old for anything. There are many other qualified Kenyans who can view for the AUC seat!
