Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin recently appeared in court in response to a judicial order regarding the case of three missing individuals alleged to have been abducted in Mlolongo on December 16.
The court summoned them to clarify the status of Justus Mutumwa, Martin Mwau, and Karani Muema. During the proceedings before Justice Chacha Mwita, IG Kanja detailed the timeline surrounding the case. He disclosed that reports concerning the missing persons had been filed at both Mlolongo and Athi River police stations.
Following the filing, Kanja directed the DCI to initiate an exhaustive investigation led by Assistant Inspector General Paul Wachira, who was present in court to provide updates on the ongoing inquiry. Kanja reiterated his commitment to the rule of law, affirming his respect for the judiciary and its directives. "I confirm that we have none of the men in our custody. But I want to assure Kenyans that they are safe," he stated.
In his testimony, DCI Amin elaborated on the status of the investigation, highlighting that it remains active. He assured the court that upon completion of the investigation, the findings would be submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP). Amin emphasized the absence of the missing individuals in police custody, stating, "I also wish to state that the missing persons are not under the custody of the national police service. We have not arrested them, and they are not under our custody."
Amin concluded by addressing the limitations faced by the investigation, stating, "Under the present circumstances, we can neither produce their bodies nor prefer any charges."
