Fred Matiang’i Keeps Supporters Guessing, Says He Will Announce Plans at the Right Time

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has signalled a potential return to the political arena, engaging in a regional tour across Kisii and Nyamira counties.

The former CS has hinted at future political moves, fueling speculation about a possible presidential bid in 2027. His tour marks his first extensive public appearance since returning from the United States, coinciding with discussions with key political figures and vocal support from Gusii region leaders.

Matiang'i addressed large crowds at several stops, including Nyansiongo Market along the Kisii-Sotik Road, emphasising his focus on listening to the populace before announcing any formal political intentions. He acknowledges the encouragement from his supporters, stating their backing has propelled him to engage in consultations with national leaders.

“I appreciate your support and the confidence you’ve placed in me to begin discussions with other leaders. When the time is right, I will return to inform you of the next step,” Matiang'i told supporters at Nyansiongo Market, indicating a strategic approach to his political comeback.

This announcement comes after meetings with prominent opposition figures, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, further stirring speculation about his political future. On May 2, during a rally in Keroka, Matiang’i urged the Gusii community to maintain unity, stopping short of a direct declaration for a presidential run. He noted, “I am grateful for your love and encouragement—I hold you all in my heart. Let’s move forward together and embrace what is good and honourable in the eyes of our Creator.”

As Matiang'i tests the waters of a potential 2027 bid, a unified declaration from Members of Parliament across the Gusii region has solidified support for Matiang’i, with many endorsing him as their preferred candidate for the upcoming election. Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo reinforces this sentiment, stating, “We have empowered him to engage in consultations and prepare for the next elections,” underscoring the regional mandate given to Matiang'i.

The endorsements cross party lines, with lawmakers from both the ruling and opposition parties voicing support. Matiang’i’s influence is particularly notable given the endorsements from MPs aligned with President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga. North Mugirango MP Joash Nyamoko, a member of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), stresses the importance of regional unity behind Matiang’i, framing him as the key figure to unite the Gusii community, which he believes has suffered political marginalisation for years.

Nyamoko stated at a rally in Chepilat Market, Nyamira County, “As a region, we have endured political marginalization for years. Now, we have decided that Matiang’i will unite us under a common purpose.”

Reinforcing the need for voter mobilisation ahead of the elections, Kitutu Masaba MP Clive Gisairo, an ODM legislator, urges residents to register in large numbers. Kitutu Chache South MP Antony Kibagendi echoes this sentiment, calling on the community to rally behind Matiang’i’s vision. Additional endorsements came from Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, UDA-nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba, and former West Mugirango MP Vincent Kemosi, consolidating Matiang’i’s position as a potential frontrunner for national leadership.

Matiang’i’s tour was structured with multiple high-energy engagements. It commenced in Kijauri (Nyansiongo) at 9 a.m., followed by a major rally in Keroka. His stops included Keumbu Market, where he engaged in a meet-the-people session, and a central address at the Kisii Capital Roundabout, drawing thousands of supporters. Accompanied by Governor Amos Nyaribo and other regional leaders, Matiang’i made several stopovers throughout Kisii and Nyamira counties, strengthening his connection with local communities.

The night before the tour, anticipation built up in major towns with branded vehicles mobilising residents for the rallies, reflecting the growing excitement surrounding Matiang’i’s political next steps.
