Rare Albino Tiang Spotted at Sibiloi National Park

A rare albino Tiang antelope has been sighted near Alia Bay on the shores of Lake Turkana, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) confirmed on Monday following a routine ranger patrol in Sibiloi National Park.

The Tiang, a subspecies of the Northern Topi, is normally recognised by its reddish-brown coat and agility across open grasslands. The animal observed by KWS rangers, however, displayed the pale colouring characteristic of albinism-a genetic condition caused by the absence of melanin, the pigment that determines skin, fur, and eye colour.

Albinism is extremely uncommon in wild species and often presents survival challenges, including poor vision and increased exposure to predators.

In a statement shared on social media, KWS described the sighting as “truly rare” and “a powerful reminder of nature’s beauty and unpredictability.”

The agency used the occasion to urge continued public support for wildlife conservation. The presence of the albino Tiang in the remote and protected environment of Sibiloi National Park underscores the park’s ecological importance.

Part of the Lake Turkana World Heritage Site, Sibiloi is known for its fossil-rich landscape and wide variety of wildlife, providing refuge for species vulnerable to habitat loss and human activity elsewhere. Animals with albinism, although striking in appearance, often face greater risks in the wild.

The Tiang’s survival will depend largely on the stability of its habitat and ongoing conservation monitoring. KWS has encouraged the public and visitors to share their wildlife observations to promote awareness and appreciation of Kenya’s biodiversity.
