IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati Appoints Deputy National Returning Officer

Consolata Nkatha Maina, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Vice Chairperson has been appointed as Deputy National Returning Officer for Thursday's fresh presidential election.

In a letter signed by electoral commission Chairman Wafula Chebukati on Tuesday, IEBC said it had appointed Consolata Maina to conduct the repeat poll. The appointment comes after the commission held a series of meetings with various stakeholders in the last few days including President Uhuru Kenyatta and National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga.

Nkatha will assist Chebukati in his mandate of receiving, collating and verifying the results from over 40,000 polling stations. The appointment also means she can declare the final presidential election results in case the Chairman is absent.

This comes even as the Supreme Court is on Wednesday scheduled to hear and determine a petition filed by three voters seeking to have the October 26th repeat election postponed to a later date.

The next major announcement "Chebukati resigns". As long as there elections who cares whether Wafula is there or not. My worry is the Maraga 4. If they cancel the elections, Kenyans must ignore the law and declare Uhuru as winner.

The next thing you will hear is that Chebukati has resigned. That will be followed by “Maraga” court of the jungle cancels October 26th repeat elections. If not, you will hear “the National returning officer is a Kikuyu and she was planted by Jubilee to rig”. God forbid! Where are these ruthless gangsters taking our nation.

Kamwana will be appointed pende msipende that is what the short meeting between UK and Chebukati was about. He was told ukisikia kuretire, toka uende lakini hakikisha nitaapushwa na deputy 26th sijali kame nimwanamume au mwanamume mnyama au shetani. Chebukati is simply looking out for his interests. He does not want the conséquences of a sham election to be on his shoulders.Acha hawa watu wa central wajichague na wajitawale.I choose to walk away I owe allegiance to my community. Wise move.

When the situation becomes too thick to understand, the way forward is to think of "how will these eerily events be in relevant 1, 5, 10 or 20 years from today?"
Currently there is too much talk, too much activity (without accomplishments) but not many right questions are being asked. When the process becomes so complicated that even pundits fail to understand people and their views, then the future is impossible to predict. One thing that is clear, this thing is a ball of hot coal and no one wants to hold it too long lest the burn their hands.

@Oneday you are so right. There is so much activity, too much confusion and no resolution. I admit the dust is too much to see clearly where this ends. Today we woke up to the international media story, numerous court cases, shooting, appointments in IEBC, panic, and the day is not over yet! Expect even more confusion tomorrow, before the dust settles at 11:59pm, then we may get a good idea what this gives birth to. I hope Kenya survives this.

Diasporans, you need to relax a bit. Thinks are not as tense as you may think. We are even enjoying the whole sarakasi down here. One thing is for sure though. Kenya is not going to burn for the second time becouse of one man's XXXtra large ego.
