Njoki wa Ndegwa, Host of US-Based Jambo Radio Network (JRN) Has Passed Away

Njoki wa Ndegwa, founder and host of the USA-based Jambo Radio Network (JRN) has passed away. Njoki passed away on Friday at the Parklands Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas, where she was being treated for metastatic brain tumors.

Njoki wa Ndegwa was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014 and successfully combated the disease and was given a clean bill of health. In October, 2016 however, she started having problems with her voice and balance. Upon going to the hospital, she was again diagnosed with aggressive Metastatic Brain Tumors. The tumors led to a loss of her voice as well as mobility in September, 2017.

A veteran radio broadcaster, Njoki worked at Kameme FM in Kenya for many years prior to immigrating to the United States. Soon after arriving in the US, she co-founded Jambo Boston Radio and became its host. Like many other Kenyans who move to the US, Njoki told NPR News that she did not know what the future held for her, and some of her friends urged her to return to Kenya to continue with her successful radio career. She however “why not be a Kenyan radio star right here in Boston?"

The online station was later renamed Jambo Radio Network (JRN) and under Njoki’s leadership and warm on-air personality, the station has garnered a large audience among Kenyans living in the USA and other countries worldwide.

Details on plans for Njoki wa Ndegwa’s send-off will be announced later.

So sad! I used to listen to her on Kameme FM, before she went off air... Kumbe she moved to USA? I think she was one of the pioneer presenters of Kameme FM... When Kameme was Kameme! I remember her for articulating Gikuyu language very well and her gorgeous voice! Till we meet... May our God grant her family the fortitude to bear the loss.

I clearly recall on December 11th 2002 on the eve of Jamhuri day when Njoki Ndegwa visited the Kenya National Archives some minutes past 5.00 Pm. She was working for Kameme FM. The gates had been closed because it was past working hours. I was walking out when I found her pleading with the guards to permit her in but the guards were adamant entry could not be allowed. I was then a Senior Archivist. As soon as I learnt of her mission I asked the guards to permit her to get in and collect the information she wanted. I accompanied her back into the building. All she wanted were the names of colonial governors up to 1963. I remember assuring her that she could take all the time she needed to collect the information she needed for a morning program the following day. I even assisted listing the the names of the governors since these were all displayed on the walls of the Archives. she got all the information she wanted and the following day she made a wonderful presentation on the subject of colonial Kenya governors. May she rest in eternal
peace

Rest in peace our loved sister.
I have lived to know you since the time you used to handle the program "Kameme Gospel count down".
I think that I cannot be wrong to regard to death as a thief. But on the other hand, everything happens with God's reason.
Rest in peace our loved sister once more.
May God restore peace in the hearts of all who feel oppressed by this sad incident.

Oooh no. I remember before I relocated back to Kenya, I used to listen to a program I loved and I enjoyed one guy called Boiyo who used to have a different maoni from the rest of the listeners. I liked the way she used to accommodate different views from all, whilw reminding everybody, " Macio ni mawoni maku..." Rest in peace Njoki Ndegwa.

I will never forget our last conversation on whether to do our last chapters of the Kaburi Bila Msalaba but postponed to have time to see the Doctor never to hear the voice again. I'm very saddened but RIP.

When Njoki wa Ndegwa was working at Kameme FM in early 2000, I could hardly miss her show which I vividly remember came between 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. She was articulate, had a good mastery of Kikuyu language not to mention her words of wisdom and wise counsel which she readily and freely gave with a distinct sweet mellow voice that made you hooked to her programmes every other day.
Njoki surely touched many souls because her radio session was not about working but a service to humanity and she did it selflessly, religiously and with strong passion.
Your service was not in vain and your legacy Njoki will live for ever.
May the good Lord rest your soul in eternal peace. Amen!!!

If I will ever remember anything it is the moving morning prayers at 8 am before she went on air. Those prayers were powerful. If I missed my day was never the same. Huruka kwega mwana witu.
