Kenya’s Diaspora in the Nordics Prepares for Cultural Day in Stockholm

Kenyans from across the Nordic region will gather in Stockholm on 27 June 2026 for the annual Kenya Cultural Day, one of the largest events organised by the Kenyan diaspora in Northern Europe.

The celebration brings together members of the Kenyan community from Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland. The programme will feature Kenyan food, music, dance and sporting activities, providing an opportunity to showcase the country’s cultural heritage.

Organisers expect this year’s event to attract a record number of participants, reflecting the continued growth of the Kenyan community across the region. Sweden is home to the largest Kenyan population in the Nordics, making the event an important fixture in diaspora life.

Traditional dishes including nyama choma, pilau and chapati will be served, while cultural performances will highlight Kenyan traditions and encourage cultural exchange with local communities. The Kenyan Embassy in Stockholm plays a central role in supporting the event and other diaspora initiatives.

Led by Ambassador Angeline K. Musili, the embassy is accredited to Sweden and several neighbouring Nordic countries. This arrangement forms part of Kenya’s approach to managing diplomatic representation in the region through a single mission.

In addition to supporting cultural activities, the embassy organises business forums, national celebrations and outreach programmes for Kenyans living abroad. Embassy officials regularly travel across the Nordic countries to engage with diaspora communities and strengthen bilateral relations.

The embassy serves an estimated 30,000 Kenyans living in the Nordic region. Members of the diaspora work in sectors including healthcare, engineering, education and technology, contributing to both their host countries and Kenya’s international presence.

This year’s Cultural Day takes place during a period of increased engagement between Kenya and the Nordic countries. President William Ruto is scheduled to visit Finland on 10 and 11 June 2026 for discussions with Finnish leaders on trade, education, technology, innovation and climate change. The visit is expected to strengthen cooperation between Kenya and Finland.

The Kenyan government has also increased its engagement with citizens living abroad as preparations continue for future diaspora voting arrangements. During a recent meeting with Kenyans overseas in Nairobi, President Ruto reaffirmed the government’s commitment to involving the diaspora more closely in national affairs.
