New Law Introduces Extra Requirements for Kenyans Applying for IDs

Kenyans applying for national identity cards will now be required to provide additional details that were not among the requirements in the past.

This comes after President Kenyatta signed into law a Bill that introduces new requirements for those applying for new IDs.

The Registration of Person’s Amendment Act now requires those applying for new IDs to provide information about their location, land reference number and plot or house number.

The law also gives the government authority to collect DNA information of Kenyans in digital form for personal identification.

“Insert biometric data … means unique identifiers or attributes including fingerprints, hand geometry, earlobe geometry, retina and iris patterns, voice waves and Deoxyribonucleic Acid in digital form,” reads part of the amendments made to the law.

Before the new law, Kenyans were only required to provide details on their place of residence, postal address and copies of parents' IDs. Additionally, the government only took the applicant's finger and thumb impressions for personal identification.

The new law also paves way for the establishment of the National Integrated Identity Management System (NIIMS), a database that enables the government to store and print one's personal documents including IDs; birth and death certificates; driving licenses and passports from a central location.

President Kenyatta has appointed an inter-ministerial committee to oversee the creation of the system.

Members of the committee include Cabinet Secretaries Joe Mucheru (ICT), Sicily Kariuki (Health), Henry Rotich (Treasury), Amina Mohamed(Education), Mwangi Kiunjuri (Agriculture), James Macharia (Transport), and Attorney General Kihara Kariuki. Interior CS Fred Matiang'i will chair the team.

DNA goes a long way my friend. In case someone was to come to your home and rob and leave hair, fingerprint, blood or skin. The information collected within this system will identify the individual within 5 minutes of running the data. This is widely used in developed countries with diverse background of people and a large population. It is high time we identify everyone by their true DNA because it will be easy to track you down if you broke to law. This also means in the future, all documentation such as passports, ID's,DL's, accounts (MPesa etc.) will be synchronized to one system where if you were to do something crazy or break the law, all it will take to ground you is shut your Identity down and you won't be able to buy, sell now run away by flying or driving without your documentation. It could be a good thing but also too much control to a government.

Technology is not a alternative to failed policies. What part of that does the boy in statehouse not understand?
This is the same administration that is unable to make CCTv work in Nairobi after spending billions thinks a database will solve the terrorism problem in Kenya.

The solution is there for all to see. Corruption is the cause of insecurity. Remember the wall between somalia and Kenya that the boy laid a foundation stone for? Remember CCtv. The list is endless.

"The Registration of Person’s Amendment Act now requires those applying for new IDs to provide information about their location, land reference number and plot or house number".......What about people who live in the slums or nomads & squatters

The USA had all the information about Osama bin laden , and he still organized an attack against them.

A Kenyan government losses money through corruption.
That money funds criminal organizations and terrorism because, it’s money that cannot be traced.

There is no shortcut to fighting crime and terrorism.
The shortcut is reducing corruption and accounting for all the public funds.

Let us be wary about a government that has not resolved corruption and may use more detailed information of it's citizenry to destroy its citizenry by selling this information to foreignors as it has been selling our soul by increasing our debt and bringing more foreign languages (Chinese) before having a budget or even slightly developing our local languages to empower our people or give them some self- respect.
Let us have our leaders first disclose everything they own and their working with foreign governments before they have us colonized again.
God save Kenya. God give Kenya leaders not politicians. God help Kenya!!!

So long our security officers are taking bribes, all these will be a waste of time and resources.
