75 KRA Officials Arrested in Crackdown on Tax Evasion

75 Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officials were on Friday arrested on allegations of abetting tax evasion and bribery.

The officials were allegedly found to have colluded with certain individuals to evade payment of taxes and reduce tax liability as well as issuing fraudulent tax compliance certificates.

In a statement, KRA says the suspects have been arrested following months of investigations into cases of tax evasion and bribery.

“Investigations into the rackets have been in progress for the last four months with covert assistance provided by national law enforcement agencies to help in trailing money and communication,” KRA says in a statement.

62 of the arrested officials are from the Domestic Taxes Department while 18 are attached to the Customs and Border Control Department.

They are accused of allowing illegal clearance of cargo and altering tax returns to help individuals dodge tax payments.

The suspects are set to be questioned before being presented in court to face various charges.

The tax agency has not revealed how much revenue was lost in the process.

Many, including several in this forum, who scream the loudest on the evils and the cost to society of corruption would have no problem bribing their way out of a legitimate fee or tax liability. The corruption we see in the country is very much a reflection of us, myself included. I had sworn never to bribe until I was entangled with a ruthless traffic cop. For those of us who run businesses in Kenya, suppliers will often ask whether you want a receipt or not - a euphemism for "we can both save on our tax liabilities." The difference in Kenya will be made by all of us thinking country first. Constant complaining, whining, calling leaders names will never get us anywhere.

Many, including several in this forum think we should keep quiet and continue paying taxes which are then looted. We should not point out the failed leaders who engage in PR and gimmicks while kenyans continue to suffer.

I will pay as little as possible to the government. Avoid taxation at every opportunity. My taxes will not be looted. Shame the thieves and their enablers at every opportunity.

Then announcing a big empty promises sooner and which will be dragged almost a year before election.

But the best weapon for Wananchi to copy and past Sudan only for the supports to clean out the old guards and their friends.
