Family of Late Kibra MP Ken Okoth to Receive Sh32 Million from Parliament

The family of the late Kibra MP Ken Okoth is reportedly set to receive Sh32 million from Parliament following his demise.

The amount includes the late politician’s group life insurance cover and death gratuity, according to Daily Nation.

A parliament pension officer, however, told Daily Nation that they must first get a letter from the courts indicating the administrator of Okoth's estate before disbursing the cash.

Once family members agree on how to share the money, the name of the administrator must be published in Kenya Gazette to allow anybody with an issue to file a complaint.

Each MP contributes 12.75 percent of their salary as pension, which is matched by the State. Their pensionable emoluments include salary, responsibility allowance, constituency allowance, nominated member’s allowance, ex officio member’s allowance, house allowance, accommodation allowance, and sitting allowance.

The Parliamentary Pensions Act states that only MPs who serve for two terms or more are entitled to a monthly pension of at least Sh125,000 for the rest of their lives.

Those who serve less than two terms get a refund of their contribution, with an annual 15 percent interest.

Okoth’s brother Imran told Daily Nation that details of how they will share the late MP’s estate are a private matter.

The 41-year-old politician succumbed to colorectal cancer while undergoing treatment at Nairobi Hospital on July 26th. His remains were cremated in a private ceremony held at Kariokor Crematorium in Nairobi on August 3rd.
