13 Killed as Nairobi-Bound Bus Collides with Trailer

13 people were killed after a Nairobi-bound passenger bus was involved in a grisly road accident at Awasi, Kisumu County early Friday morning.

Kisumu County Police Commander Benson Maweu said the Eldoret Express bus was trying to overtake another vehicle when it hit an approaching trailer at Pala area.

“The bus was traveling from Kisumu towards Kericho on the Kisumu-Nairobi Highway when the driver tried to overtake a cane tractor and was involved in a head-on collision with the trailer,” said Maweu.

Among those who lost their lives are 12 adults and one child, Maweu confirmed. The 13 passengers died on the spot while 35 others sustained injuries and were taken to various hospitals for treatment.

The ill-fated bus had started the journey in Siaya and picked more passengers in Kisumu on its way to the capital.

Bodies of the deceased passengers were taken to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary.
