Nigerian authorities have opened a probe to find out how a man convicted of fraud ran a $1 million (Ksh100 million) online scam from behind bars.
Hope Olusegun is currently serving a 24-year sentence at Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison in Lagos, having been convicted of fraud seven years ago.
Olusegun’s fraud schemes are said to be international and covered two continents.
An preliminary investigation found Olusegun had access to a mobile phone and the internet while in prison.
Using a fake identity, he reportedly managed to open two bank accounts, buy a luxury car and houses around Nigeria using proceeds from his crimes.
At one point, Olusegun was admitted to the Nigeria Police Hospital in Lagos but exited the hospital under unclear circumstances and went to a hotel to meet with family members and attend social functions. He is suspected to have been conniving with prison officials after bribing them to cover him up.
Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said Olesegun masterminded a “mega scam” to the tune of more than $1m from jail. He was arrested in 2012 and sentenced for internet fraud.
The EFCC said they are trying to establish how he “continued to ply his ignoble trade of Internet fraud from prison”.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the convict, against established standard practice, had access to internet and mobile phone in the correctional center where he is supposed to be serving his jail term,” EFCC spokesman Wilson Uwajaren said in a statement.

So unfortunate! Yet there are so many legitimate sites where one could learn to earn money online morally, like this one: https://www.wealthyaffiliate.com/?a_aid=1492215a
"Nigerian authorities have opened a probe to find out how a man convicted of fraud ran a $1 million (Ksh100 million) online scam from behind bars." This is bullshit!!!. The government of Nigeria is the main sponsor of the scammers in the World. UN should create a new category for State sponsors of fraudsters and blacklist Nigerian government as a state sponsor. Nigerian government earns hard currency through exporting scammers and hardened criminals to other countries. Kenya is their new found land and it's only a matter of time before Kenyans realize it and start lynching them. Nigerian government through it's administrative organs such as the Central bank, embassies and commissions work hard in hand to facilitate ill gained money back to Nigeria. Case in point is that of Dr. John Indakwa, a once prominent Kenyan scholar based in Houston, Texas who was murdered by Nigerian scammers some years back in a complex scheme that involved Nigerian embassy in Washington, the Central bank of Nigeria and Nigerian oil corporation. (In case you want to know more about Dr Indakwa he was a former head of African American studies department at the University of Houston. He hailed from Western Kenya and was nephew to the late Cardinal Maurice Michael Otunga of the Kenyan Catholic Church). Doctor Indakwa's case will make your tears flow because of its brutalities and savage physical violence and great cruelty that was involved and demonstrates demonic side of Nigerians
@ Dr. Koni Hanene, you are right about the Nigerian government colluding with criminals is nothing new.I remember at the height of their internet crimes US media accused the Nigerian government of issuing authentic government seals to crooks to stamp "validity" on their crime-documents. And of course as usually the Nigerian government denied.
Some of you sports lovers may remember that IAAF mistakenly issued Nigeria Sports Federation acheck of 150,000 dollars. However, the IAAF accountants quickly realized their mistake and demanded 100,000 dollars returned. After dodging, and passing the blame, the Nigerian officials finally just returned the cash two weeks ago.But only after threats from the World Athletics threatening sanctions against Nigeria. What a shame...
The divine element in humans is the capacity for moral choice. The country of Nigeria and its people is manifestation of evil. Someone who chooses to do evil is making a moral choice as much as someone who chooses to do good. One cannot choose to do evil without the innate capacity of moral choice; the fact that they chose evil still reflects that divine capacity, even if we would have preferred them to choose otherwise.James 1: 13–15 tells us that when tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. In the modern African history Nigeria ranks second from the former apartheid government of South Africa in terms of evilness. Since evil Nations don't last for longer the prediction is that Nigeria as a Nation is headed for total destruction. That destruction may come in form of Boko Harum making it unrulable, tribal wars over limited resources, or being erased by diseases like Ebola. Evil will never prevail over good and evil Nigeria will be destroyed like Sodom was destroyed

Kudos, well done!
Nigerians are not the only ones who commit crimes. Kenyans are also not that innocent especially abroad. We like to hate on the Nigerians but we forget kenya is a country that is full of culprits from the president down. Isn’t kenya the place where a wheelbarrow was being charged 100,000 guess that was nigeria right? The Kenyan guy who was drank and killed a trooper, oh my bad that was nigerian too. Let’s remember Kenyan criminals too before we judge the nigerians
@okatprettygal - you got your hands full with a wide range of choices to pick from for your significant other! It sounds that in your individual opinion a Nija thief is more preferable than a Kenya thief! No one is merely throw throwing stones to your love!
Those who have commented are just stating a basic fact pertaining to this conman from Enugu, Nigeria. Wow, just knock yourself out and have fun!

These guys hailing from this particular Nation are scary. I crossed path with one at a certain Dallas pub, he introduced himself as a pastor, I guess to gain my trust......but wondered what he was doing at a pub. Without wasting time he started telling me how he can connect internet for me and be paying him 30 Bucks a month instead of me paying 100+ to Spectrum ( my cable provider). He does not have a company but yes that is what he does for a living and has a lot of customers off course from Nigeria. Where does he get this internet and cable from?
