Court Summons Nairobi Governor Sonko for Assaulting Senior Police Officer

A Voi court has summoned embattled Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko to face assault and resisting arrest charges.

Sonko, who is accused of assaulting a police officer during his dramatic arrest on December 6th, was summoned on Wednesday, December 18th failure to which a warrant of arrest will be issued against him.

Police Spokesperson Charles Owino said Governor Sonko assaulted a senior police officer at Ikanga Airstrip in Voi, Taita Taveta County during an arrest sanctioned by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji. Sonko is reported to have assaulted Coast Regional Police Commander Rashid Yakub.

“During the arrest, he became abusive, unruly and violent in an attempt to resist hence obstructing police officers from the lawful execution of their duties. In the process, he assaulted and injured the senior police officer leading the team and damaged media equipment,” said Owino.

Sonko, who spent five days in custody, was freed on a cash bail of Sh15 million after pleading not guilty to corruption-related charges before Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti.

The emperor has no clothes. Sonko should face the judge for assaulting the police officers. It is about time this criminal faced the justice for his criminal acts including siphoning billions of public funds for his use.
