16-Year-Old Kenyan Stowaway Found in Plane's Undercarriage in Holland Discharged from Hospital

A 16-year-old boy who was found in the wheel arch of a cargo plane that landed in the Netherlands from the UK has been discharged from the hospital.

The stowaway, believed to be a Kenyan national, was rushed to the hospital with severe hypothermia on Thursday.

He is thought to have clung to the landing gear of the Turkish Airlines cargo jet that arrived at Maastricht Airport from Stansted Airport in London.

A flight between the two cities takes about half an hour and reaches an outside temperature of -30 degrees. A spokesperson of Maastricht Airport said it was “amazing how he managed to make this trip and that he survived.”

Reports indicate the Airbus A330-200 plane flew to London from Nairobi (Kenya) via Istanbul (Turkey) on Wednesday before heading to Maastricht the next day.

In a statement, Dutch authorities said they are looking into the possibilities of human trafficking.

“The Marechaussee in Limburg is conducting further investigations into, among other things, possible human smuggling in connection with the stowaway found at Maastricht Aachen Airport near the landing gear of an aircraft,” the statement reads.

The teen was discharged from the hospital over the weekend and is said to be in stable condition. Police in Holland are set to interrogate him in an attempt to solve the mystery.
