Fraudster Caught Selling Sh40 Million Apartment in Westlands for Sh11 Million

Fraudster Caught Selling Sh40 Million Apartment in Westlands for Sh11 Million

Detectives in Nairobi have thwarted attempts by a notorious fraudster to obtain millions of shillings from an unsuspecting homebuyer.

Hussein Fakhruddin Mohammedbhai was arrested on Wednesday by sleuths from the serious crimes unit while attempting to sell an apartment that did not belong to him.

The officers pounced on the suspect minutes before he inked a deal to sell an apartment in Nairobi’s upmarket Westlands suburb, according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The three-bedroom all ensuite apartment worth over Sh40 million at the current market rate was being disposed at a measly Sh11 million.

Forensic document examination and handwriting experts based at the DCI National Forensic Laboratory established that Mohammedbhai had forged a title deed certificate for the property and entered into a deal with a real estate company to sell the property on his behalf.

Fortunately, the property’s owner got wind of the dubious deal and contacted the DCI. Upon further investigations, it was established that the suspect is a serial fraudster who had earlier obtained close to Sh9 million in a similar scheme.

Mohammedbhai is being held in police custody pending arraignment at Kiambu law court on Friday to face charges of obtaining money by false pretense.

Any person who may have been defrauded by the suspect has been urged to report to DCI’s Serious Crimes unit.

He must have slipped up somehow unless it was a sting operation. And by the way, isn't 40 million an exaggeration? The going rate for apartments in the wetlands neighborhood is somewhere between 20 and 30 million at most. I recently bought one.

....apartment rates; it depends on the size, location, and fixtures in place. Not all 2bdrm apts in Westlands are equal....some are more equal...n by far, my bratha.

Property values in Kenya are seriously overinflated. Granted Kenya has a great climate and a really great atmosphere but surely, should apartments in Kenya cost more than in Florida? My 2 bed condo in Saint Louis with all the trappings cost me $125k and a similar one I was looking at in Tampa was listed at $215k. Those over inflated prices in Kenya have a lot to do with the booming money laundering industry. Correct me if I am wrong.

Wahindis in Kenya have been involved in swindles, tax evasion, immigration frauds, corruption, contraband containers, etc. for years.
The authorities have just touched the toe of these people. There are many who are out there.
