The Kono Farm, a successful snail farming venture, was among the five winners of the sixth annual Give Work Challenge (GWC) in East Africa.
The Leila Jana Foundation (LJF) recognized Kono Farm, alongside Mvuvi from Kenya, Mawejje Creations and the Reusable Sanitary Pad Project for their outstanding businesses. The winning entrepreneurs will each receive a grant of $6,000 and one year of mentorship, totalling $30,000 to support their businesses and create a positive impact in their communities. Liliosa Mbirimi, LJF Program Director, says that the GWC grant and mentorship will help the winners have a larger impact on their communities and positively impact budding entrepreneurs.
Kono Farm was honoured for promoting sustainable snail agriculture as an alternative protein source and skincare ingredient. The LJF aims to follow the mission of its namesake, Leila Janah, by alleviating global poverty through giving work, not handouts. Four renowned companies have recently invested in snail farming in Kenya which has been growing in popularity over the past decade.
This industry has been rewarding farmers handsomely with a kilo of snail meat valued at Sh1,500. Snails are also considered to be nutritious with 70% of their mass being low-calorie protein. The Jomo Kenyatta Institute of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) has recently ventured into the snail industry, extracting slime from 3000 snails, translating to 10 litres a week at Ksh1,200 per litre.
Snail farming has created 322 jobs for previously unemployed youth with 37 ventures receiving northwards of Sh29 million since 2018. There is a substantial global demand for snails with Rosemary Odinga, the daughter of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, launching her own snail enterprise on her vast 25-acre property located in Kiserian.

In Ghana, and Nigeria, heliculture is a big thing. My bradhas, and sistos de consida dem a decicacy. Fried snails????
For along time I did not eat shrimps because they reminded me of white grubs.Interestingly,I have head that they are a delicacy among some Luhya sect.
What this tells me is that we should all be open minded when we consider what other cultures do.None it superior or inteferior to the other. It's way of life that could be adapted...My emphasis here is on food. Not homosexuality,or alternative lifestyle.
Nilimkumbuka mwimbaji mmoja mashuhuri ambaye aliimba:
“ Ukiwa kijana tembea uone mengi ya dunia. Nilikwenda Mbale Uganda…”
Jambo lililo muhimu ni kuuliza na kujua kwanza chakula unachopewa kabla ya kuanza kukila.
Pia, ni muhimu kujua kinywaji unachotaka kunywa kabla ya kunywa halafu kuuliza baadaye.
@Ndugu Imara Suluhisho, you remind me of a visit to our home in Luhyaland when I was a young boy. This visitor was served ugali with ground beef.As others tore into the sumptunous meal, the fellow did not touch his beef for many minutes...Eventually he asked what it was before diping his spooned ugali into the grounded beef.
Yes, take few minutes to ask.It might save you from vomiting...
I looked up the song. It's called westen Shilo. It has agood beat.I broke asmall sweat, and built an apetite for kuku na nyama. To eac Paka meat , I have to live in Ghana for 20years seeing them eat every day...
As you can see habits formed for along time through culture and customs cannot just be erased with logic... I remember this Indian guy who sunk his teeth in a Burrito ,only to later find out that it was a beef burrito instead of beans burrito he had ordered. According to his court case, he had to go back to India and cleanse himself in ariver Ganges.Quite atiny unexpected expense. It's easy to say just wash your mouth and forget the incident...Not so.
Pole-Pole🐌ndyo Mwendo.😇
